I would like some instructions on how to take a scanned image and turn it into a background screen.

Hi Oliver and welcome to No Wonder!

First make sure the image is in JPEG or PICT format. If it is not, use a program like GraphicConverter to convert it.

Next open the Appearance control panel, click on the Desktop tab and click on the "place picture" button. Select your picture in the next window.
