Hi, we have a Matshita DVDR UJ-816
perfectly capable of backing up dvds... or so I'm told
It seems perfectly capable to be honest, but here's my question
I've tried about three different dvds now, using the disk image capcabilities of the disk utility in OSX application.
1) Most of the time the disk image won't even copy, it just says permission denied... for my own dvds I bought and own and need to back up
2) The one time I made a disk image, was not of one of my dvds so I don't know if thats what this was, but the image played a fuzzy warner bros screen, and then blacked out but played audio (on the computer, didn't bother burning)
Specific to this latest trial, when I try to make a disk image it says permission denied like before, and if I just try to drag and copy files it says some data in "whatever" could not be read or written.
Is this a permissions thing? How could this be true for DVD's I own? Are there any other options? We payed a lot of money for the dvd combo superdrive and we are interested in USING IT!! ( :
Thanks SOOOO much for any help you can provide
sincerely

Hi Matt,
First of all: Thanks for using MacOSX.com for over a year now! I have two points for you, but one is rather unhelpful now, but good to know.
1: Either it's a Combo drive, or a Superdrive, but a Combo Super Drive doesn't exist.
2: What DVDs are we talking about? Commercial Motion Picture DVDs, Software DVDs, or self-made DVDs using apps like iDVD?
Thanks,
Ferdinand H.

Hey Ferdinaand, you're very welcome and may I say you all always give excellent advice. Though I never once fill out the helpful surveys that say so, I find the site and service a paradigm of beneficial philanthropic energy.
Superdrive it is. comercial motion picture dvd's.
I know there are region codes and ntsc frame rates and bit rates and what not, and I'm familiar with these things to an extent, but as to the specific process involved in taking a movie dvd, and making an exact duplicate that will play in a dvd player, I remain curious...
I'm familiar with dvd-r vs dvd+r and know what the apple takes as well as my player... I actually got a dvd-r burned the other day as well using a free program that took FOREVER...and in spite of the video ts folder and audio folder appearing exactly like the movie dvd did when inserted into the laptop (first menu of the finder when opened) and though that dvd-r plays on the laptop, it doesn't load and autorun on the laptop, and on the player it won't load and allow playing at all...still can't get the dvd-r to work in my player.
Thanks!!!

Hi Matt,
Ok: Let's see, you said you use a free application that makes copies of DVDs. I would suggest MacTheRipper. You can download it here:
http://dl.macupdate.com/final/utilit...per266.dmg.zip
Be aware though, that this is the direct download link as you can see. I would download it as soon as possible, since they "officially" shut the app down and is nowhere left for download. It took a while to find it and it might not work. But surely some websites still have it.
About the DVD-R and DVD+R, you said you tried it with -R, but what about +R? Did you try that? I burned a test dvd with +R using a Mac, and it worked on my DVD Player as well.
"Guate Nocht!" as you say in Austria, which means good night.

Wow, are you in or from Austria? The mac superdrive won't even burn dvd+r apparently, since Matshita is a prominent member of the dvd-r police (dvd forum I believe), specific rivals to the +R police (Alliance i think. But I have tried +r, no go. Mac the ripper is the one I used!! So I've got the right program it seems, I just need to know what could be the formatting problem with the dvd...what are some of the reasons a dvd-r player would not read a burned dvd-r???? If you know or could work to find out and I will too that'd be great. I love wikipedia.
Peace out yo
(couldn't resist)

Both! I'm Austrian and live in Vienna. I have MacTheRipper myself, but since I just wiped my Mac and am re-installing everything (from 10.3.4 to 10.4.8) I don't have access to it now. I'm going to do some research in the mean time (PS: I also love wikipedia, so much info on one website!!!) and am going to get back to you the latest by tomorrow evening!
Thanks and to you too!
