I don't plan to upgrade to Leopard. I bought Tiger a couple of years ago and have upgraded it to (I think) OS 10.4.11, the latest.

I am Dick-with-little brain (for you Winnie the Poo lovers) and don't have a clue what is behind the GUI.

In the unlikely event of a major crash, I wish to backup my latest version of Tiger on CD. I only have dialup and it would be a looong process to upgrade from my DVDs.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Regards

Dick-Welcome to Macosx.com.

What exactly would you like to backup? Would you like me to explain how to backup your photos, documents, and music? Or, would you like to backup the operating system ( without any of your personal files ) in case the Leopard upgrade doesn't work as expected?

Thanks in advance for the information,

Leonard Slutsky

Thanks for replying Leonard.

I spent some time thinking about my original question and realised it may have been a bit vague.

To clarify -
• I do not intend to upgrade to Leopard;
• I bought Tiger a couple of years ago and have it on DVD;
• Since then I have upgraded Tiger versions to the current version (from memory 10.4.11).

What I am looking for is how to backup my latest version of Tiger. As I have the DVD of the first version of Tiger and I suspect backing up the whole OS to CD wouldn't be possible (I don't have a DVD burner, so I figure there would be too much data to stick on a CD).

So what I am looking for is a to make a CD backup from the version on the DVD I have to OS 10.4.11 which I am currently running.

I have only had one OS disaster, which looked like a Windows BIOS - black screen and white type - which I fixed by reinstalling the OS from the DVD I have.

But if I do get another crash (unlikely is it is) I would like to restore to the latest version that I am currently using (10.4.11) rather than restore Tiger from my DVD and ask a friend with broadband to get me the three or four update versions that would bring me back up to date. I have dialup which would make it almost impossible for me to do the job myself.

I am a technical idiot and cannot see behind what is on the screen (the GUI) but I figure the updates which exist on my eMac are accessible somewhere and able to be copied.

I have no probs in backing up my photos, docs and music, which I do regularly. It is the upgrades of Tiger I need to have on hand on CD in case of a disaster.

I hope this makes my original query clearer and I look forward to any help you can offer.

Thanks Leonard

Hi Leonard

I just received an email saying I have not responded, yet as you can see from the above I have (probably in too much detail).

Yes I would like to keep my request open until you (as I have every confidence you will!) solve my problem.

Cheers

Hello... Dick

I think you might need to consider a couple of options

1) get a cheap external drive compatible with your Mac (FW is best) but USB would do.. and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to make a copy of your Mac

2) Download the latest combo update (10.4.10) and put that onto a CD/DVD and be able to use that to come upto speed.

Hope that helps...

Come back if you need more advice

Thanks Leonard - your advice made me work out where the update is. Under Library/Receipts. I should have used Spotlight in the first place to track it down. Silly me.

I now have Combo 8, 9 and 10.4.10 safely on a memory stick, so if I have a crash I can reinstall 4 from the DVD and update with what's on my USB stick.

I told you I am a techo idiot! Thanks again.

Dick...

Just to be clear for you - the receipts in /Library/Receipts are not the actual updates... they are simply receipts (Bill Of Materials) files that list what was installed and where. you need to be sure that you have the actual 10.4.10 Combo update DMG file stored away (you can download this, or get a friend to do it - it isn't small, from here... http://search.info.apple.com/?search...ype=&q=10.4.10

You can choose PPC, Intel or Universal - in your case probably you will want the PPC one - or choose the Universal if you think you may want to be on the safe side... You do not need any of the intermediate updates - this one will update all previous versions back to 10.4.0 straight to 4.10.

Hope that helps...
