Larry,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. Start up your powerbook with the Tiger DVD - first use the power adaptor and plug it in the powerbook and a power outlet. Insert the DVD, restart the computer and immediately hold down the C key.
When the install screen comes up, release the key but do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.
When Disk Utility opens, click on the second icon at the far left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom far right.
Watch the activity screen. If it shows repairs being done, you will need to run it again. This is just to make sure that it finds all the problems and repairs them. You want to see Appears Okay.
Now click on repair permissions. This is just to the left of Repair Drive.
When done, quit Disk Utility and restart the computer.
Does Backup still give you errors?

HI Cheryl,
yes, went through all of that and backup still quits when I try to backup to CD/DVD or drive. A send error report to apple appears each time. Not sure what is going on. Itunes works now. Thanks
Larry

Larry,
Go to Home>Library>Preferences. When you have the Preference folder open, go to the View menu and select by list. This will put everything in alpha order.
Now locate and trash com.apple.Backup.plist
Empty the trash.
Give Backup a try.

Hi Cheryl,
Well, I deleted those prefs, tried to backup to drive and backup crashed and quit while I was setting the location. Any thoughts?

Larry,
I do have another suggestion to do.
1. go to home/library/preferences/Backup (a folder) and trashed the entire Backup folder.
2. Stayed in home/library/preferences and trashed: com.apple.Backup.plist
The following items are in the Backup folder which you trashed:
RestoreCatalog-iDisk.cat.gz
RestoreCatalog-iDisk.cat
RestoreCatalog-CD-R.cat.gz
RestoreCatalog-CD-R.cat
BackupSet-iDisk.cat.gz
BackupSet-iDisk.cat
BackupSet-Folder.cat.gz
BackupSet-Folder.cat
BackupSet-Folder.1.cat
BackupSet-DVD-R.cat.gz
BackupSet-DVD-R.cat
Backup.log
BackupSet-CD-R.cat.gz
BackupSet-CD-R.cat
Now empty the trash and then give Backup a try.
One note: do not backup applications.
