Description:
After going without any back up of my system for a year or so, I decided
now to start backing up. I have a Performa with 1G storage, and I recently added a Zip Plus drive for backup. (I have read the warnings about Zip, and I expect using several sets of backup volumes should give me the appropriate insurance.)

I've used DiskFit in the past, and I liked the ready accessibility of the backed up files as well as the reuse of backup disk space. But I've also looked at Retrospect, and I like the data compression it does although I don't like the way additional backups are appended wasting the disk space of files which are being backed up again.

So...my question is "Is there software out there that will reuse space on the backup volumes and write compressed versions of the backed up files?" Certainly I couldn't use the compressed files without a decompression program. but that seems like a small price to pay.

Steve,

The appending "method" that you refer to in Retrospect is only one option offered by Retrospect and one that I don't even recommend. You can easily do a full rewrite to the disk and not an "append"....by far Retrospect is the best backup software out on the market...always has been. Even if you lose the catalog file, it will still to do a good RESTORE which most other backup products won't do.
