Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Hardware
Computer Type: Apple
Model: 7100/80
RAM: 24meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: Not related

Description:
Mac 7100/24/700 with OS 7.5 has lots of freezes. Problems sometimes become acute when running Photoshop or Quark and writing to an exteral Zip drive. Freezes occur erratically, sometimes none for days, sometimes two per hour.

The system turns sound to mute when the comuter reboots.

I have been told there was a series of 7100s with undocumented motherboard problems. True?

Serial # FC5090NH44H.

A companion 7100/80/24/700 with OS 7.5.5, SN FC 5101ZC44H, has few problems.

These units have been maintained less well than they might have been. The explanation for using 7.5 on the problem machine is incomprehensible; when I got involved, I took four or five extra system folders off the drive, all of them earlier. Mostly, I wondered if working on software problems is fruitless because of an undiagnosed hardware problem.

Dennis,
I also have a 7100/80, I have not heard of any "undocumented mother board
problems" and I don't have more problems with it than any other Macintosh system
I have used. However, 7.5 (if you are really running 7.5) was a disaster (as I
recall) hence the quick release of 7.5.2, 7.5.3 etc. If there is some real
reason for running a MacOS this old you may wish to try 7.6.1. And I would
recommend a complete reload (if possible) just to be sure there isn't anything
left laying around to cause you problems later.

Good Luck,
Mark Nettleingham
