TICKET ARCHIVE -> Beige G3 Restart Problems

When I try to boot-up my G3 (OS 9.2.2), it only partially boots up. It stops after about half of the icons at the bottom of the screen (extensions?) have appeared. Then I hit restart only to see the same thing happen. On the 6th or 7th try, it finally works. I've been doing this every day for the last month. What can I do to fix this? It used to start up with no problem. Success at fixing this will be cause for me to DONATE!!

Hi Rob

Restart holding the Shift key down and let me know if it fully boots that way.

If it does, one of your Extensions or Control Panels is causing the problem.

Have you installed anything just prior to this happening?

Yes, it boots just fine when I use the shift key or rebuild the desk top. Yes, I installed several applications all at the same time prior to the problem, so I don't know which extension is the problem. The bottom icons that load at boot up stop with the Palm Desktop icon. When it fully boots, the icon to follow the Palm looks like one of the two iomega icons, (one for the internal 100mb and one for the 250mb external drive? When I bought my B&W G3, I transfered the exact same System folder and Apps from the Beige, and the B&W boots-up with no problems. How can I feather out the problem icon/extension? Thx.

Rob

Try turning off the Palm extensions and see if it boots without holding the Shift key.

Bob,
I not only removed the Palm extentsions, I deleted the whole Palm program (I can always reinstall it later). When I restarted, it only took 3 restarts to successfully boot up. It stops at the extension that has an "i" and "magnifying glass" on it (iomega?).

I used Disk Aid and it found no problems and then I rebuilt the desktop, but it still takes 3-4 times to reboot.

Look in the Extension Manager for the extension with that icon and turn it off and see how it starts.

I went to the extensions mgr and disabled it. On restrat all the extensions loaded up with no problem, but all I got was my desktop picture and my cursor turned into the "clock" look and it never finshed the booting up. I tried it twice with the same result. Maybe I should look at my B&W G# and look at the extensions manager to see if they are the same (since both systems are identical)?

Even if both systems are identical, one could have problems and the other not.

Set your Extensions to Base or MacOSAll and see if it boots normally. If it does, turn three at a time back on and restart until you get to where it won't boot. It will be one of the last three you turned on.

I tried "base" and much to my surprise it was worse, only three icons loaded. I have not tried "ALL" yet (waiting until Saturday when I have more time), but something tells me that I will have to spend many hours fishing out the guilty extension(s). Bob, I did discover the Mac "Help" menu and it was also helpful with suggesting the use of the "Space Bar" at start-up to select the extension settings. If you have any other suggestions that I can try this weekend, I'm all ears. Thanks.

Rob

Extensions are a pain to trouble shoot because you have to turn a few on at a time and restart till you find the one causing the problem.
