There have been a number of important firmware updates for 1G% 1.8 models, but I don't recall whether they were for the single or dual processor model. Check Apple's downloads page for these update (using another Mac, obviously) and the instructions for applying them.

Try booting up in "Safe" mode, i.e., with the shift key held down. If the Mac boots, then there's something running at startup, probably something in your Login Items folder in your Accounts prefpane causing the problem.

If you have access to another Macintosh with a Firewire drive, connect yours to the other in "Target" mode (see Apple for instructions). You can then use the other computer to a) repair the disk and repair permissions on your Mac's drive using Drive Utility on the other Macintosh and b) do an install/archive of your system using the CD/DVD drive on the other Macintosh.

This is an example why it's so useful to have a cloned copy of your hard drive on a second internal drive or an external FW drive. When disaster strikes, you can use the other copy of the drive to boot up and fix your main drive. SuperDuper is a fantastic utility to do this, and well worth $27.95 (I have no affiliation with the developer, just a satisfied customer).

Finally, typing in all caps is the email equivalent of shouting, and also hard to read.

HTH and please let us know what happens. Thanks.
