Hi,

I have a problem with booting up. It seems like the finder is not loading. I just get a blank blue screen with a mouse curser.

Any ideas?

Anything will help!!

Thanks!

Deks,

Did you install anything just before this happened?

Using the OS X CD, startup the computer - insert the CD, restart the computer and immediately hold down the C key.

When the computer starts up you will see the installer screen. Do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility. When Disk Utility starts up, click on the second icon at the left. This should have the name of your hard drive. Now click on Repair Disk.

Watch the activity screen for Appears Okay. You may need to hit the Repair Drive several times in order for the Appears Okay to show.

When done, quit Disk Utility and restart the computer.

You should be working smoothly now.

Hi Cheryl,

First, I'd like to say Thank you for replying. It is really a rarity on the net !

Okay, so...Tried that. Can't boot off a CD. I am using an OSX installer disc that came from a G5. I wonder if that has anything to do with it since I'm trying to boot that G5 cd on a G4?

Tried that with Norton to the same effect.

Thanks!

Deks,

Thank you for getting back to me.

You need to use the OS CD that came with the G5 or a full install OS 10.3 CD. You can not use the CD that came with the G4 because it has a system folder on the CD to boot only the G4.

Norton Utilities should not be use on any computer that has OS X installed. Symantec has stopped supporting utilities for OS X. You need to use Disk Warrior, Drive 10 or Tech Tools Pro CD as a third party utility.

You need to try again, with the OS CD that came with the G5, or a full install OS 10.3 CD.

Hi Cheryl,

So I'm guessing that it wouldn't work the other way neither right. Shoot. okay...is there a way to boot up on a firewire drive? I'm thinking of getting a drive with a startup disk on it, putting that onto a firewire drive, and booting from that.

Thanks for your attention,

Deks,

First, make sure the new drive you get has 10.3 installed on it. Connect it to the G5, then start up the G5 by holding down the Shift-Command-Option-Delete -- and that's the big delete key by the "+ =" key, not the little delete key by the numeric keypad). That will force the computer to look for external devices from which to boot. It should find the firewire drive.

Rather than get an external fire wire case and drive, you can install the additional hard drive inside your tower. The tower has accommodations for a second drive inside. There is a power connector and the drive cables (flat ribbons) inside waiting for an additional drive.

You should invest in Disk Warrior and a full install copy of 10.3 for cases just like this. You could possibly have trouble with the next drive you get - that is Murphy's Law. Being prepared is the best policy.

You should also being doing a back up of your important files periodically. This can be done with Carbon Copy Cloner or a back up utility program.

Deks,

I am sorry, I think I misread your reply.

You need to boot the G4 using a full install OS X CD or one that came with the G4. It should say OS X install G4.

You can not use a G5 CD to start up a G4 and visa versa, i.e. using a G4 CD to boot a G5.

I am sorry for the confusion I caused you.
