I have two Power Macs G3 blue and white. I have tried to install OS 10.4 (tiger) on both with no luck.
Firmware is updated on both Macs. I succeeded without any problem to install on my G3 power book (firewire). I have reset Pram i even removed battery for some minutes. I took out SCSI card etc. The only difference on the two macs is hard disk attachment. Seems one is ata and the other SCSI. One is with third party dvd (which i tried to install from). Finally i made a clean install on an external HD and then swapped it into the mac (tried both). No luck!
Symptom: one mac start with gray screen on spinning wheel then freeze with a strange graphic clutter on screen. Other mac goes little longer but ends up with the well known black rectangle (but no text as it use to be).
I'm frustrated

Jan,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. Your English is fine, so do not worry.
What type of install did you do? Upgrade, Archive or Clean on the two machines?
Did you disconnect all devices that were attached (except the monitor, keyboard & mouse)?
How much memory do you have installed on the computers?

Hi Cheryl
Well, i removed all ram on one mac and installed an apple supported 512 kb ram module. Also attached original apple keyboard and mouse. I dunno if the dvd drive is original since i did not installe myself. I could not read from the drive anyway, so i suppose its not recognized. I bought a new 80 GB hard disk (HITASHI DESKSTAR) dropped into my G4, did a clean install on the reformatted HD according to apple (extended i think) and swapped it into G3.
I have tried to connect with my apple powerbook firewire to use the dvd drive from there but with no luck.
Also took a firewire dvd drive from work and attached it, but again, no luck.

Jan,
Do either of the Blue & Whites have a second Graphics card/monitor port?
Sadly, the Blue & White can not be used as a firewire Target.
Are you sure these models have a DVD drive? Some models were released with just a CD drive.
And, as you found out, swapping drives only works with the same processor machines. On a G4, installation is slightly different than a G3.
You should be able to start those computer with the Firewire drive.
Insert the DVD in the drive, restart the computer and immediately hold down the Delete + Option + Command (apple key) + Shift. This should force the computer to search for a start up disk.
Let me know if this works.
What OS was on those G3s before you tired to install Tiger?

No second graphic cards in either. My guess is that the one with dvd was born with cd and later swapped with dvd.
Ill try again to connect my new external dvd drive and try the key combination you sequest
I had Panther on both and one with classic 9.2.2
Ill get back to you regarding startup from dvd drive

Hi Cheryl
I haven't got a delete button on my mac keyboard. Its the very first small one. Ill bring another from work tho.
I didn't succeed in connecting my new Lacie dvd firewire drive (dunno if its bcause of the missing delete key)
I tried to install a new HD from my PowerBook G3 and put it into the blue and white one, but no luck either. (tried since its also a G3 processor)(and cause you told me that the install from my G4 is slightly different).
So totally out of luck :-(
But now I'm going on a weeks Holiday.
PS. is there any point in acquiring the install on CD ?

Jan,
The delete key I was referring to is the one above the return key - the backspace key.
Do you have an OS on those drives? If so, start up on that and open Apple System Profiler. You want to check Hardware. This is where it will show what you have a CD drive or DVD drive and what model it is.
I will keep this ticket open until you get back. That means I will respond to you a couple of times during the week. After three days, the system automatically closes the ticket. I will avoid that.

Jan,
No, I do not have any more tricks. Let me know when you get the Cd from Apple. You have to go through the web site for the exchange.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/
Look for the Media Exchange box at the right of this page.
