Hey there!
I am from Germany so my English isn't that good. But I hope you'll understand me anyway.
So, I've bought a Bluetooth adapter by Belkin. I've even figured out myself how to get my SMS on my cell phone (Siemens S55) onto my iBook G4 (10.3.9). Though, I just can't open the SMS on my iBook. They have got the ending .smi (=self mounting image). Can you help me?
Sincerely
Rebecca

Dear Rebecca,
My name is Vinko and I will attempt to answer your question.
When you say you got your SMS from your mobile phone to your iBook, what application on your iBook did you use for that? Was it the "Bluetooth File Exchange" application, found at the following path: /Applications/Utilities/?
These SMS you're transferring to your iBook should not have the extension ".smi". This extension as you correctly pointed out are reserve for Disk Utility's "Self Mounting Image", which your SMS message definitely not.
Have you tried opening these SMS message on your iBook with the TextEdit application, found at the following path: /Application/? If this works all you have to do is change the extension of your SMS message files to .txt, answering "Yes" when the OS ask you whether you want to change the file type of your file.
I hope this helps.

Hi Vinko!
Thanks for your quick reply.
I've already tried to use another application (such as TextEdit or Word) to open it. It just won't work that way. And yes, I did use the Bluetooth File Exchange application. I didn't choose the extension "smi". It just came up with it.
What can I do now?
Sincerely
Rebecca

Dear Rebecca,
Thank you for your reply.
It looks like others too have similar problems in the past.
Unfortunately, I do not have a solution.
I will post your question back out to our queue to see if someone else can help.

Hi Rebecca,
The reason is because some phones store in a format that's only readable to themselves. I'm not aware of any program that opens this kind of files. The easiest solution for you is probably to use BluePhoneElite, a SMS management program. It is a shareware program, and it should do what you want. You can get the program from:
http://www.reelintelligence.com/BluePhoneElite/ (MacOSX.com has no affiliation with them)
Let me know if this solves your problem.

Hi Charlie!
Thank you so much for this hint.
I did download this software. But I still can't open my SMS on my computer.
I don't know how to transfer my SMS to this software so it can open them.
Sincerely
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,
BluePhoneElite interacts with your phone direct, so you won't be able to use it to read SMS files you already transferred to your computer. To use BluePhoneElite, you might first pair your phone with OS X first. Since you can transfer files back and forth between you mac and the phone, I assume that you have already done so. You can go to System Preference -> Bluetooth and check if your phone has been paired.
Next, open BluePhoneElite. Click on the "e" symbol on the upper right of your screen and choose Preferences. Click on Phones and make sure your phone is enabled.
Now, click on the "e" symbol again and this time you should see the name of your phone in the menu with a submenu. Go to that submenu and click on connect (make sure Bluetooth is turned on on your phone). After a while you should see the cell phone network name next to the "e" symbol. Now open that menu again and click on SMS center. In the drawer to the left you should see your phone. Select it, and you should be able to browse the SMSes in your phone (might take a little while)! You can export them as text files, or, if you want to, use BluePhoneElite to manage your SMSes (Just move the messages to the Local folders in the same drawer). You can actually compose SMS in BluePhoneElite and send it from your computer (You can also do this using the Apple Address Book for free)!
Let me know if you have more questions.
Charlie
