Can anyone recommend an appropriate version of Word for Mac that would offer a Book Layout Format program (for aspiring writers)? Currently I am running Mac OS 10.4.11 and have Microsoft Office X Word for Mac. Normally I use AppleWorks for all word processing but have been encouraged to use Word in order to generate the proper layout for writing books. Thanks in advance for your help.

Bill, is the book written and now you have to lay it out? Because I would never encourage anyone to *write* in Word. You can work in most anything and export to Word in the end ... but I'll tell you, when I imported my novel into Pages, there it was, beautifully layed out.

Mellel is a wp that pays particular attention to book MS. Maybe it's just me, but I've never heard of depending on Word for anything unless one absolutely must.
It did make a TOC for me, after huge labor, but then if I changed anything ...

Well, depends on what you are writing. I did see a fairly costly package someone had put together to make Word create a book, an individual. I don't recall his name, but if you haunt Google--and maybe the Word MVP page--you'll find him.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate your perspective. Am in the beginning process of writing, nonfiction. I am very comfortable with AppleWorks having used it over the years. My only thought on putting everything in a book layout format from the getgo would be in the case of inserting tables or photos it would already be formatted for a particular size page. I will defer to your judgement. Thanks again.

By the way, where can one obtain Pages, that you mentioned?

Sorry for the delay in responding. Actually, there are a number of interesting programs for writers, depending on your need to organize as you go along. Take a look at MacUpdate. I can think of Avenir .. there's more. See if you are a free-form first draft writer or not.

Pages is Apple's superb text program, comes with Numbers and what all as iWork. There are some free word processors like Bean ... I use NisusWriter ...
Have fun with your project!
