PROBLEM: Software
COMPUTER TYPE: packard bell
MODEL: Pentium II 300
RAM: 65+
OS VERSION: Windows 98
SERVICE PACK: ???

DESCRIPTION:

When you boot up the computer and it runs through it's regular stuff, it shows the Windows 98 background while it loads up the icons and just in the last month, a window pops up titled programs and it has nothing in the directory, I'd like to have it where that pesky window doesn't open every time we turn on the computer or reboot. Thanks

HI Warren:

My name is Juan P. Lozano, and I'll try to help you to close this annoing window.
It appears like you have a program started at logon and creating this window.

First, look at your Start Menu (look in Start/Programs/Start Menu) and see if there is some programs listed here. There is a great probability the window was open for one of these. You can click these programs to look if the window opens. Then you know the offending program and can remove it from the start menu.

Is this doesn't work, you should use REGEDIT (press Start/Run Program... and enter REGEDIT in the command window) and look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

Here are listed programs the system runs automatically when an user logs in. See if one of these is the program creating the window.

CAUTION: REGEDIT is a powerful tool and can damage your operating system if not properly used. If you are not comfortable with this, don't use and ask for help or detailed instructions.

Another possible key to look is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunServices where Windows store programs executed at startup.

Hope you can resolve your problem. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need further advice.
