I have a new Intel based Macbook (2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo with 1 GB Ram). I am running Leopard 10.5.1.

I have been trying, without success, to split the 120 GB drive in half. Half for Mac, half for Windows XP. I have legal copies of both XP Home Edition and XP Pro. I have tried with both to have the 60 GB Windows partition to be NTFS (of course that's a requirement for any Windows partition greater than 30 GB).

I can't get it to work no matter what. When it's time for the second Windows boot I get the message "missing or corrupt hal.dll file". Nothing I have done will make it go away. I have tried quick format for the NTFS partition. I have tried full format for the NTFS partition. I have tried the command (from the repair console) bootcfg /rebuild as suggested by an Apple Support tech. I have gone back to zero and wiped out the entire drive and re-installing Leopard, starting Bootcamp again. All with the same results.

What I would like to know is: Has anyone actually been able to accomplish this (half MAC, half NTFS)? If so are there some tricks that I should know about? At this point I am more than willing to throw away the little bit of data that I have on the MAC partition and start over from scratch once again.

Do you have 32-bit versions of Windows?
64-bit versions won't work through Boot Camp

Does your Windows XP installer CD have service pack 2 on the same disk? It will say Service Pack 2, or SP2 on the label. You will not get it to work properly without service pack 2 or newer.

You are having a Windows problem, and not an Apple or Mac problem.
Here's a Microsoft support link that may help (if you can wade through to something that will help)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477
If that article doesn't help, then you can Google for your Windows boot error. There's a lot of links for that, and you should find something that will get you going.
Here's an example - http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how...ing_or_cor.htm

I have the problems. I was able to speak to an Apple 2nd level support tech who walked me through the process. The problem was as follows: When you install windows you need to choose the Bootcamp partition for your Windows install. that part was obvious that's what I had done. But the next two steps are not so obvious. When you look at the description of the Bootcamp partition it is labled as a FAT32 partition. I assumed I had to delete that partition and create a new NTFS partition (NO, NO, and NO). Leave it alone direct Windows to install in the Bootcamp partition. You are then given six choices of what to do 1. Quick format FAT32, 2. Full Format FAT32, 3. Quick Format NTFS, 4. Full Format NTFS, 5. convert to NTFS and 6 Leave the current file system intact. Choose 3. Quick Format NTFS. Then everything will work fine. I now have a 55GB Mac Partition and a 56GB NTFS partition.

It is, in my mind anyhow, a MAC problem, they seem to be saying all but option 6 is OK. Not true. Option 5 is what I was effectively choosing and it doesn't work. The support tech told me that option 4 would not work either.
