I have the 933 powerPC G4 that runs OSX.3.9 that I bought from work. As work doesn't have the OS9 installer CD I bought a retail OS9.2.1 installer CD from Ebay. Even though the 'read me' instructions specifies my G4's compatability, the Mac doesn't boot from the CD successfully. It reaches 'OS9.2 welcome' and the CD desktop picture but when it should be loading icons at the lower screen it freezes. I have tested this CD on my old iMac and it launches succesfully, so there is nothing wrong with the CD itself, but I am already running OS9.2.1 on there, so I guess it could be a system compatability thing. At least I know I havn't bought a dud CD. I haven't come across an issue like this in the forums and hope its just a simple solution as many of the support questions I have found say that adding OS9 after OSX is quite possible. I have two CD drives: one called 'harddisk' and the other named 'store'. I have an ethernet connection to the internet and a wacom Intuos 2 tablet connected if this is any clue to the issue. I have already tried booting from the CD with these disconnected and the result is the same.

Can you network the two computers together? (the OS10 and the OS9 machines)
Have you checked the Apple site ( support.apple.com ) for firmware upgrade for your machine? ( I seem to remember some kind of firmware upgrades on a lot of machines when going from 9.0-9.1 to 9.2 )
Do you have the OS 9 drivers installed on the 10 HD?

I guess I can network the iMac (OS9) to the G4(OSX)... I have an ethernet cable and port that I use to connect to the internet.

I have checked the support.apple.com and much of my investigating that led me to macosx came from there. I am still looking for OS9.2 firmware, but havn't been succesful finding it. But as soon as I find it and install it I'll try again and let you know imediately...wait a minute... there is firmware in the OS9.2 installer in a folder called G4..grrrrrr but the installers are OS9.2 and can only be installed via a OS9 partition.

Do I have the OS 9 drivers installed on the 10 HD?
When I choose the main hard drive (57.6GB) in
Disk Utilities/ partition: a check box is ticked for 'OS9 drivers are installed'- but everything is greyed out and can't be changed. I've thought this might be a clue. The other disk on the G4 is called 'store' and is 18.6GB, its options can be changed.

1) If you can network the two together and see the old Mac's HD, then you can copy the system folder over, and then in System Preferences, go to the Start Up Disk control panel and choose the OS 9 system folder.
OR after copied over, upon restart, hold down the Option key until you see all available startup options. You should be able to choose the OS 9 system there as well.

Try downloading that link. What you will need to do after its done, is open Disk Utility, and then highlight the .dmg package on the left, and choose burn. ( Of course you will need to have a CD burner and a blank disk ) then try starting off that disc.

Might try this link too

If I remember how I did my post OS X - OS 9 install, it was the copy system folder trick. (That was a long time ago though)
If you cant network the two together, are you comfortable taking the HD out of the OS 9 machine and slaving it in the OS 10 machine? (I can give some assistance) We might be able to get a boot that way.

Ok, but is it necesary to network the two computers or slave(?) the hard drives?.... why not just copy the system folder over by zip or burn a CD?...or ...since I have been able to open the OS9 CD on the desktop, I have been able to copy the contents into the 'store' (18gb) disk (it just won't boot up all the way from it)... and I have noticed that when I go to start up disk control panel it tracks it down, or anywhere else that I've copied the system folder to.
So would I be able to start up the G4 from one of these system folders? Would that work?
I was tempted to try it that way before... but I had an awful scare when I chose startup to OS9 CD and it kept restarting to the CD and keep getting stuck. And I couldn't eject the CD because the keyboard didn't have an eject button. After that I have not been game to try much incase of getting locked out again when I have work due in a couple of days.
The startup/option key is the trick I was looking for though, thanks.
Otherwise, I'm not really comfortable with taking out the HD from the iMac. Open-cut surgery gives me the willies!

But in the mean time, I will download the links you've given me, burn the CD's and wait for your advise on my opening idea.
Thanks for your help so far!
