I've been using a Mac for a couple months, so consider me ultra low tech level. I am having trouble burning double layer dvds. The system has a Pioneer dvd-rw dvr-109. The system specs state the unit supports +r DL. I am using IDVD. The computer has worked very well using -R (single layer) I've burned about 20 without a problem. The operating system is Mac OSX Version 10.4.2
The discs are Fujifilm dvd+r DL 2.4X. The unit is a g5 2.7 with 512ram. At some point in the process i get the "spinning ball of death" and it states iDVD not responding. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks andi602

Hi, Steve,
The one thing I would suggest that you check is that you have at least twice as much free hard disk space available as your project uses to allow for encoding and burning; you can track your DVD project size in the Status pane of the Customize drawer. For example, if your project size is 8 GB, you need at least 16 GB of free space on your hard disk to encode and burn the project to disc.
This is fairly new technology so I may not have a solution for you if this isn't the problem but we'll try to find the answer.
I would also suggest that you make sure that you are using the latest version of iDVD. You can click on the Apple Icon at the top of the screen and select "Software Update." Since you just bought it a couple months ago, I would say that you probably do have the latest version, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Thanks for the very fast response. I had checked the 2 things you suggested. I have 44gb free space on hard drive. I also updated the latest software from apple.
The mnft of the burner, pioneer, offers a software update, which I have downloaded. The file is an .exe which the mac will not open. Any suggestions. steve

Steve,
The .exe is a PC application so that definitely won't work on the Mac.
A couple of other things to try.
Use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
Go to your user's Library - Preferences and delete the iDVD preferences.
I also went on Apple Discussion website and found a couple of other things. Try checking your project and see if there is something wrong with the movie you are trying to burn.
"One way to test your project before you burn it is to save your project as a disc image. The disc image of your project is a fully encoded version of the project that you can play in Apple DVD Player or burn to disc later. You can preview the disc image to make sure your project plays correctly and then make changes without burning a disc that you might not use."
If you have Toast, you might want to try using that as well to burn the disk. You can use the disc image that you made. It won't honor where you put the layer break but you could see if the burner is working correctly.
It has also been suggested that you use Verbatim disks though I don't know that that is causing your problem but it might not hurt to try one.
