I was using my canon camera to upload pictures onto image browser with the correct cable into the correct port and for some reason it didn't work the first time so I unplugged the camera and replugged it in and then it worked. But, now I have this pop-up error window that won't respond and I can't get it off my screen. it says
"Failed to connect to the device. -Check the I/F cable connection between the device and your computer. -Please turn off the device once, and then turn on the device again. Then try again. [MTW005]
I restarted my computer twice with and without the cable connected and it didn't do anything. I shut down the computer and turned it on again and it is still there. It's like the mouse can't click on the ok button. Nothing happens. Help. I don't want that stupid message there for ever!

You might fix this my opening your Image Capture software (in your Applications folder). Go to the preferences, and change the setting for the Application that launches when a camera is connected. You may have an incorrect app showing there. Change it to iPhoto, and then quit Image Capture. Then restart your Mac. Go back to Image Capture, and change that same setting to Image Browser (your Canon software), if that's what you prefer. That should fix that error message.
Don't try to connect with your Canon camera until you complete that 2-step process.
If all this doesn't help, perhaps your camera is just a coincidence. That error is most often associated with problems connecting to a scanner! Is that a possibility with your system?

Actually, it seems that you are right! Now I can't seem to use my scanner. I just tried to scan something and I got a pop up window that said "checking device status" and it never seemed to stop thinking and won't scan. Now what?
Ps. I couldn't really figure out how to change the preferences for the application that launches when a camera is connected. I went to the applications and found the software pertaining to the cannon camera, but I didn't see where it was that I was able to change the preferences. Maybe you should address me in more detailed terms since I really am not so savvy!!

As I said, use your Image Capture app, in your Applications folder. The Image Capture app preferences are where you can change the application that launches when a camera is connected. Don't use your Canon software to change that setting. It is controlled by the Image Capture preferences. OK? You can change that setting in Image Capture so your Canon software launches when you plug in your Canon camera, if that is more convenient for you.

Ok, I found the image capture preferences and changed it to iphoto like you originally suggested and then restarted my computer. The first thing that came up after restart is that annoying error window again. I did what the error window suggested, to turn off the device and turn it on again once, and that did nothing. I am still unable to click "ok" on the error window and it won't go away.

Your scanner, or the scanner software appears to be misbehaving.
You should consider uninstalling the scanner software. If you tell me the specific brand and model for your scanner, also your OS X version that you are using, I might be able to help you with the scanner. Some scanners can even be used without any software installed, as OS X has usable support (again, through Image Capture, which is probably why you are having difficulties with that scanner.) You can often use Image Capture to connect to some scanners....
Or - try disconnecting your scanner, and see if the error message still appears. Don't just turn off your scanner, actually disconnect from your Mac.

I have a brother multi scanner/printer/fax/copier and their software doesn't work with mac so I scan through word and photoshop. I have model # mfc820cw and I'm using Mac os x 10.3.9
I just got the scanner to work again but still can't get that stupid error window off my screen.
I'll disconnect the scanner now and see what happens. I have to sleep now, will check back in in the morning. Thank you!
