restart, shut down or log out will not do anything, sleep works fine.
can only hold power button in to shut down. So cannot update software or restart from external drive to try to figure out.
I suspect I will have to do new install of software but hoping not.
I did use cocktail for tiger and most likely screwed something up.
Good old 9 was more forgiving Duh! G5 dual2.0 tower with 10.4
Help!

This suggests low-level corruption someplace in your system. I would recommend an "Archive and Install" option using your original system DVDs, then let Software Update do it's thing for all the updates issued since you bought the G5. the Archive and Install option works pretty well and preserves your preferences, data, etc. Note, however, that if you use any Adobe CS2 app, you will not be able to double-click on an app to launch it after doing this. You will need to reinstall Adobe CS2 (and get all the updates for that as well through their updater). HTH

I did the archive and install, and before that cleared the pram, still the problem persists. Another strange thing with this machine since day one is it will not sync with my .mac account address book. It will do book marks in Safari. It stops and I get two messages from .mac one says I should reload my data from another machine with good data basically. But all my other machines (3) Imac, G4 and iBook have no problem with the .mac account. I have used grab to capture the two messages and can attach or send if you think it would be helpful or could be related to this problem. I suspect not as the no shut down problem is more recent the .mac problem from first hook up to internet when I opened the box. I have had it since Aug 3rd or so. Added 1gb memory, second hard drive and airport card. Worked fine with all these additions. I think I may have done something when I ran latest version of Cocktail and checked the wrong thing as it seem like that is when problem started. Not 100% sure but I never used it before and may have cleaned something out I should not have.
Thanks, Ron
Flash! I just noticed I am running on the OEM drive now and that is why problem is still there, after archive and install when I tried to shut down it would not just as before so used the power button to turn off and restart and it came up on OEM drive. I think problem is still there but will repeat archive/install on this drive.I do not think it will effect problem but will try it.
I think the updates would not be required to shut down or log out, is that right?

Depends. Quicktime updates usually require a restart, but not app updates. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Same problem on both drives and have done archive and install on both, also zapped the pram which from what I have read also does the Vram at same time. unless open firmware which I have no idea if G5 Power Mac is.
I am going to try removing ram that was added when new but by me, Good 3rd party Crucial ram. Also will remove airport extreme card I put in and second drive and see if any of this changes the problem. Otherwise I guess its hardware and off to a repair shop. I have not been able in searching web to find similar problem. Many that will not start up but nothing on will not shut down.
