Hello Holly,
Since you have reset the controller:
-If there is a DHCP server in the LAN, XRaid has IPs supplied by DHCP. Then try to use a computer in same subnet, with 10.3 and the version of Raid Admin that came with 10.3 server. Raid Admin doesn't have to be running on the server computer.
-If there isn't a DHCP server, XRaid has IPs 169.254.... so it's impossible to connect to it. Try to open the DHCP service in the 10.4 Server and restart the XRaid so that it will be able to find the DHCP service.
Let me know if this helps.

Thank you. I can access the server remotely via server admin, but I cannot use the RAID admin. We do have a router which acts as a DHCP server, but it does not seem to be giving the RAID any addresses--the logs show that the server is getting an address, but not the RAID. Does the connection of the RAID to the server via the fibre channel make any difference? The RAID does show up on the server desktop.
It seems that when we updated the server software we lost all of our previous settings. If I am able to allow the server to be accessed by the other computers in the network, then we should be able to access the RAID--though this still won't help us get the new drives in.
My knowledge of server admin is minimal, so I'm not even sure where to start.
thanks again

Hello Holly,
You said : "We do have a router which acts as a DHCP server, but it does not seem to be giving the RAID any addresses". This means:
1. RAID can't access the network because of a physical malfunction, like bad cables (this would be a strange coincidence, though I would check them). Both controllers should have a network cable attached.
2. RAID still has IPs manually set. Could you scan the network and "guess" them? Or try this: If you didn't do an erase and install, check the home folder of your admin user in the Library>Preferences for a file com.apple.RAIDAdmin.plist. If you open it in TextEdit you may find the IP addresses of the RAID.
"Does the connection of the RAID to the server via the fibre channel make any difference?"
Not sure what you are asking, but this connection make it possible to see the RAID on the desktop.
"It seems that when we updated the server software we lost all of our previous settings". Could you tell me what kind of installation you performed?
"My knowledge of server admin is minimal, so I'm not even sure where to start." I would suggest to click on the triangle on the left of the server's name. Then click AFP (AFP shares files to Macs). Has it been started? Is the sphere green? Are there any other green spheres? They indicate the services provided by the server.
Why can't you use RAID admin? It doesn't start up or you can't connect to the RAID?
Good luck and let me know how you're doing.

Getting closer! The AFP was NOT running, That did permit me to connect to the server remotely--which is really helpful. So far, I am still not able to connect to the RAID through RAID admin.
I was able to find several com.apple.RAIDAdmin.plist files. The user library had 2 ip addressess which seemed familiar, but neither of them seemed to work. We have tried with There are 2 admin accounts on the server--I was able to open the plist file from one of the accounts, but the other one would not open. I moved the file to the other account and was able to open it--it was the same info I found in the other account.
The reason I aksed about the fibre channel connection is that we do not have the RAID connected to the network via ethernet. We have always accessed the RAID as a volume of the server, and never accessed it directly--so I wasn't sure how important the IP address was...except for the RAID admin.
I did a remote install of the server system sofware since the server does not have a DVD drive. I don't think I did it the way I shold have. I made the server a target drive to my laptop and installed it that way, then the worst happened--the power to the server and RAID was cut mid-install...a power strip switch was bumped. After that, I connected a firewire DVD player to the server and had to go through the install 2x before the server would boot up.
I'll let you know if I make any more progress.
many thanks,
Holly

Hello Holly,
No, no it's not necesery to install RAID admin on the server. Any mac os x computer will do. Sorry you got into all this trouble. Install RAID admin on any mac and then copy the app through AFP (now that's up

)

A little puzzled...RAID admin is installed on the server as well as a remote computer. The problems I had were updating the server system software from 10.3 to 10.4--not installing RAID admin.
I'm still unable to connect to the RAID through RAID admin--locally or remotely. I get a connection failure. Can you explain what you meant by copy the app through AFP--was this so I could get the ap on another machine? I'm able to connect to the RAID and share it as a volume of the server on other machinines, but hadn't been able to administer it.
I just connected the RAID to the network via ethernet, and now XserveRAID shows up in the RAID admin window (the window that shows up when you click add system)--and they have ip addresses beginning with 169...Still can't connect.

Finally figured it out. I was running a MAC filter on the router--had to temporarily disable that in order to get the router to issue the RAID its IP addresssess. After removing the filter, the addresses showed up in the log and there it was.
looks like I'll finally get those drives in!
thanks for your assistance!
