Richard,

It could be that you don't have ethernet set to be in use.
Go to System Preferences (light switch in the dock) and click on the Network icon.
You will see Location and Show with pull down menus.
Under Location select Automatic.
Under show - select Network Port Configurations
You will now see a list of the different connections you can have for the internet.
Make sure Built in Ethernet is checked and all the others are unchecked.

Now in the Show pull down menu select Build in Ethernet.
Click on the TCP/IP button.
The first options is to Configure IPv4. Select Using DHCP.
Click on the Apply Now button at the bottom right of the window.

From the Show pull down menu select Network Status.
Built in Ethernet should show in the list with a green button in front of it.

Now close System Preferences and give your browser a try out.
Let me know how you do.

Cheryl, thanks for responding so quickly. I followed your procedure. When I got to the step to check "Network Status", a page opened, but the box was empty. There was no "built-in ethernet" listed, and no green button.

Richard,

Usually a restart will correct this issue and make Built in Ethernet start working.

Once you have restarted, go to System Preferences>Network and see if Built in Ethernet is now active.

Keep me posted.

Thanks Cheryl

I restarted the G4 but still no access to internet on either Safari or Internet Explorer. No indication of Built-in Ethernet being active.

Richard,

It could be that your Ethernet port is dead.

Go to Utilities folder (in Applications) and start System Profiler.
When that opens, click on Network from the side bar at the left.
There should be an arrow at the left of the word Network. If it is not pointing down, click on it.
Now a list of more options should show. Click on Locations.
Does it show Ethernet and your modem? (modem being internal dial up modem).

Did you get this computer from a company or a private sale from an individual?

Thanks Cheryl

I went thru the procedure to check the ethernet port. In the System Profiler, I located Network which didn't have any down arrow, so I clicked on Network. It didn't expose any Options, but it closed and went back to System Profiler. I repeated this several times. This computer was bought used from TigerEffect on Ebay.

Richard,

Do you remember if the ad you responded to on Ebay stated as is or did it say in good working order? Did you get the CDs that belong with the computer? If you did get all the CDs, check for Hardware Test CD. It might be on a CD with Additional Software.
Use that CD to start up the computer and have it run its tests. This should tell us if the ethernet port is working or not.

What OS version are you running? To find this, go to the Apple in the Menu bar at the very top of your screen and select About This Mac. The window that opens will tell you what OS version and how much memory is installed on the machine.

Hi Cheryl
I have enclosed the description from the actual Ebay ad, which states the G4 is in good working order, Ethernet ready online, fully tested, and Mac OS X 10.3 reinstalled. The hard drive was changed to 40 GB before shipping. I didn’t receive any OSX reinstall disks and planned to purchase them, along with Classic OS 9.2 to run old Mac applications. However, the DVD ROM spins, but won’t mount a CD. I have confirmed 640 Mb RAM, and OS X 10.3 are on the machine. The seller supplied a PASSWORD with the machine, but I don’t know its purpose, and so far I haven’t gotten a response from the seller.

Regards, Richard

Ebay ad states:
You are bidding on a good working condition Apple Powermac G4 with 500Mhz speed processor

10/100 Base-T Ethernet ready online
Display ATY Rage128 Pro with 16MB VRAM support VGA and DVI connectors.
This Unit has been fully tested and reinstalled Mac OS X 10.3 Pather, Apple Office 2004
This auction for Apple Tower only, NO Keyboard, NO mouse included

Richard,

The seller may not respond to you. You can try using a different ethernet cable. Make sure you get Cat 5 or Cat 6 regular ethernet cable (not cross over).

As for the CD not mounting, Click on the desktop, then go to the Finder menu and select Preferences.
When that window opens, Click on General then make sure a check mark is next to Cds, DVDs and iPods. This will allow the CD icon to show on the desktop.

You probably will not be able to get the original install disk and hardware test CD for that machine.

What I suggest is that you take it to an authorized Apple Tech and have him/her check it out to see if the Ethernet port is dead as well as check the CD drive. It maybe that when the hard drive was replaced, something was not hooked back correctly.

Hi Cheryl
I confirmed the integrity of the Ethernet cable up to the port in the G4 by plugging in my Dell laptop to the internet cable, and successfully accessing the internet.
I rechecked the CD, DVD check mark in the Preferences General Window, but a CD still will not mount an icon on the desktop.
I agree that I may have to take the G4 to an Apple tech to have the Ethernet port and the DVD player checked out.
Thank you very much for your time and help in troubleshooting this G4. There are too many obstacles in the machine to allow a successful process of isolating problems, short of taking it to an Apple tech who can check these two components electrically.
Regards, Richard
