I am running OS 10.4.8 on a G4 with a Pioneer DVR-107D superdrive. The system fails to recognize blank DVDs and CDs inserted in the drive. (However, the drive works fine when I use DragonBurn.)
The firmware in the drive is version 1.10. I understand that version 1.18 is available and would probably fix the problem. There are several sites on which that version is available for Windows, but can't find any for the MAC. I have seen suggestions for moving the drive to a Windows machine, installing the firmware and then moving it back into the Mac. Problem is I don't have a Windows machine.
Can anyone tell me where I can download firmware that I can apply in the Mac?
Thank you,
ed

Hi Beverly:
Thanks for the fast response, but I need more help.
Tried the first URL, above, which took me to an OWC page, found the URL for the French site (?) and clicked. Got a page that said: "We're sorry but we can't find the Home Page you've requested....."
Tried the second URL, found the AccelerateYourMac page. The page contained a URL for "OSX flasher for the DVR-107D," but that took me to a Not Found page.
Then I found a URL that took me to an Australian site, which looked real good until I actually downloaded the files, which turned out to be .exe files for Windows.
What is Plan B?
Best,
ed

Hi Ed,
Ack! You are correct. I had bookmarked these pages a while back and it appears that the links in them are now no good. I will put this question back in the open pool in case someone knows more than I do about where to get those files now. Sorry that wasn't the answer!

Hello,
Your MacBook will only recognize -R or -RW CD's and DVD's. So, if you try to burn a +R or +RW using iTunes or Disk Utility, or anything that is an Apple application (i.e., iMovie, iDVD, etc.) it won't let you do it. But, using a 3rd party software allows burning of all disk types. Apple software does not support +R or +RW writing. That's why most Mac users will utilize Toast Titanium or Popcorn to burn CDs and DVDs.
Sincerely,
Vishad

Vishad: Thanks for getting involved in this. Yes, I know I can work around the limitations; I happen to use DragonBurn, which works pretty well. But I would like to work directly from the Tiger applications and utilities, if possible.
Today, I was told by Pioneer tech support that version 1.18 of the firmware works OK with Tiger applications. The problem is that they have no procedure for loading the firmware into a Mac internal DVR EXCEPT by pulling the drive out of the Mac, installing it in a Windows machine, loading the v1.18 firmware, and then re-installing the DVR back into the Mac. It's a klooge, but if I had a Windows machine I would try that.
There is also an unofficial Mac script, called DVRFlash_v2, that is supposed to load v1.18 directly into the Mac. I have downloaded it. The instructions are sort of scary, but I would use it if I could figure out how to get the v1.18 firmware file itself. (If worst came to worst I can buy a newer, faster model Pioneer super-drive for about $32 from OWC.)
So, I guess I am down to trying to figure out where to find the firmware itself that I can download to the Mac.
Can you help with that?
Thanks,
ed
