Hi All,

A while ago, I was cleaning up my system and deleting my unwanted files. I think I may have put up to 6 files in the trash that are needed as part of the OS. One of them is the Installer.

Whenever I try to download and update OSX 4.7 (current OS) to OSX.8, I get an error message say "The Installer package has been moved to the Trash." It asks to open it from the finder, but I can't find it!! (Even the APPLE F command wont work!!)How do I get it out of the Trash because I can't physically see them in the Trash. Having said that, when I empty the Trash I get this error message "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items". I have to click "continue" 6 times before it empties the files that can be deleted.

I know I've put files in there that I shouldn't have, so I need to get them out BUT, I can't reinstall the whole OS from scratch because this is on a work computer so my hands are tied.

Is there anyway of getting the installer out of the Trash, or installing a new version of it so that I can't get the upgrade? How would I get rid of the other files in the trash?

I've ballsed up! Any help you can give would be met with great joy!

Thank you for your time.

Hi Vahakn

Use the Go Menu>Got to Folder;

~/.Trash

See if the files are there and drag to the Desktop.

Thanks for getting back with that. I had a go but the Trash folder stiil says it's empty! If you think of another way to get my Installer up and running, please let me know.

Thanks again,

Gosun

Can you download the 10.4.8 Combo Update from here;

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...updateppc.html

If you can, you should be able to run that.

Thanks bobw, I'll have a go with that. If I can install it, will it over right everything I've got on my system? Or is it just an update?

Thanks for this!

It's just the update. It won't affect any of your apps or data.

bobw,

So I had a go and it says that there were errors installing and to please try again, which I did and it said the same thing again.

Is there a way of making the invisible files in the Trash visible?

You can use

TinkerTool

to make all files visible.

bow,

How cool is that!!!!! The files that were invisible in the Trash was a Universal file with 6 files inside which were all for Acrobat Patch. I don't think that they have anything to do with installing. I just tried to re-install 10.8 but, just as before, it wouldn't do it. It stops just after it says it's configuring and just when it starts to write the files, it stops.

Am I thinking about this wrong? Do you think that I have a preference somewhere that needs to be changed?

TinkerTool was great, thanks!

use Disk Utility in your Utility to Repair Permissions, then try the update.

If it doesn't work, boot off the Tiger disc by holding the C key.
When you see the Language screen, choose your Language and go to the next screen and stop there. Go up to the Utility Menu to Disk Utility and run that to Repair Disk.

Thanks for taking the time for this. I just want to make sure because this is a work computer (and you'll probably think me stupid for asking), but this wont wipe everything will it?

Gosun

No, it won't wipe anything from the machine. It will Repair Permissions, and Repair Disk will find any problems on the disk if present.

Hi bobw,

I just got an email because I haven't responded in the past 24hrs. I just want you to know that my job went on too late last night, but my client has left now and I'll be running the thing you suggested. Fingers crossed!! Anyway, I'll drop a line tomorrow to let you know how it went.

Cheers,

Gosun
