Finder can't ever mount Disk Images. Nor can any of the disk utilities Apple includes (I think because they all rely on the same software to actually mount the images). It just sits for a good 5 to 10 minutes then comes up with a small error that says:
Could not mount [image name]. Device not configured.
Toast Titanium 7 mounts all of the images just fine. However, Toast is somewhat limited its support for different image formats and doesn't know what to do with some of them. For example, I'm trying to mount a demo of RealBasic 2005 right now and Toast can't figure it out... so I'm stuck.
As you can imagine, it's extremely frustrating to not have your Finder mount those images for you seeing as the Mac world uses Disk Images for downloaded software almost all the time.
I have 10.4.2 and I've got my 10.4 CD if I need to pull resources from it or re-install packages or whatever.
Any clue how to fix this?

Hi Wes
Try this;
Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
Click on “Macintosh HD” in the left column and then press the “Repair DiskPermissions”button.
Move these files to the Desktop and restart and try a .dmg;
/System/Library/Extension.kextcache
/System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/

I moved both the kernalcaches directory and the kextcache file to the desktop. I repaired disk permissions with infinite success (haha). This is another problem I'm having. No matter how many times I repair disk permissions I ALWAYS get this returned:
Repairing permissions for “Jupiter”
Determining correct file permissions.
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/Widgets. New permissions are 16877
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./usr/lib/php/build/acinclude.m4. New permissions are 33060
Permissions repair complete
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume
It's like it's not actually changing the file permissions. I'm not sure of the command to check the current permissions associated with a file, but if I did I'd see what the real permissions of those files were. Not that this is related to the current problem, so you don't have to bother yourself with that if you don't have a quick idea for a solution.
The disk image failed to mount just as it always has.

I have some excerpts from the console.log file reported at startup that may be of help to you. It seems related to the kernel. The last line is related to the DMG mount failure.

Sorry for the lack of carriage returns in that pre-formatted text in that last post. I didn't know it wouldn't wrap!
Anyway, if you want more log readouts, I've got a little more from the system.log file that seems relevant to the kernel errors. It's showing a lot of failed loading for almost everything related to my extra hardware (PCI cards, FirewireIO, etc). It all says "Extension [whatever] has no kernel dependency"
Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it!

Wes
Delete the 'com.apple.loginwindow.plist' preferences out of both the user>LIbrary>Preferences and the Library>Preferences folders.
Restart and try a DMG.
Also, have you changed anything in NetInfo Manager?

I deleted the loginwindow preferences. No effect. I moved the entire ~/Library/Preferences/ folder to my Desktop and rebooted. No effect. I'm still receiving the same errors in the Console and the same errors when I try to mount a disk image.
I haven't changed anything in Netinfo Manager, though I did have a rather squirrelly installation of OS 10.4. There were some strange issues with my install, so I ended up going back and re-installing individual packages from the install CD. It fixed all of my problems I was having, but could have possibly created this one.
I tried creating a new user on my computer. That user was also unable to mount DMGs via Apple's utilities.

Bob! I fixed it!
What I mentioned about the goofy install of my OS was the issue. I removed the 10.4.2 Update receipt, re-downloaded the 10.4.2 Combo update from Apple and installed it. Everything appears to be working perfectly now.
Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate it,
Wes
