This is odd. I am downloading Vmware fusion at the moment, which may have something to do with this problem. Alternatively I may have stuffed around with some preferences without knowing what I was doing (I am good at this!).

I have just re-downloaded a Vivicam 10 driver for mac (which I have had before and which just disappeared).

When I double-click it doesn't load. So I think, hang on Dick, try opening Stuffit Expander 10 on my hard disk, the hard disk doesn't open either.

The only other clue I can offer is that I was playing with Voice Over and set 'space' as an on-off shortcut. What that did was prevent spaces between words in the word processing applications I use. Word 2001, OpenOffice, NeoOffice and Appleworks 6. Luckily I remembered what I had done in Voice Over (unusual for me to remember what I have done more than two moves ago!) and changed the setting. This fixed the problem. The reason I mention this is because that is the last time I have played around with any settings and it could possibly have some relevance to my current problem.

Hope you can help. And have a lovely Chrissie and New Year!

Regards

Dick

Wow, you do mess around a little!
If your system notes are accurate (eMac), you can't use VMware anyway, you might as well just delete that, it can't work on any eMac. You must have an Intel Mac to use that, check the system requirements.

Try this - Open your System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse pane, and click on the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. Then click on Restore Defaults button. That should at least get the normal major settings back, but won't really help if a double-click doesn't open anything.
Open your Applications/Utilities folder. Run the Disk Utility there. Click on your hard drive (the line with the name of your hard drive volume, such as Macintosh HD, or Mac drive, or whatever you have named it!), then click on the Repair Disk Permissions button. Let that finish, then restart your Mac. That may help you out...
If not, try reloading the 10.4.8 combined updater. If your don't have that, get it here. http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...updateppc.html
Run that installer, and that may fix odd thing that start happening. It will also reload certain parts of the system that might be out of place. The result should be a basic tuneup to your system!
Final question - have you had your logic board replaced yet? I replace a LOT of eMac logic boards, and most are 1.25 GHz models. Check this support page to see if you have any symptoms, and if yours is within the range of serial numbers covered by that program. http://www.apple.com/support/emac/re...ensionprogram/

Thank you Dale - and all your devoted helpers (Merry Xmas to you all). The problem seems to have been solved.

As I have dialup, loading 148m of 10.4.8 is a lengthy experience. I did it through a mate with Windows broadband but seem to have lost the CD. Never mind, that is not a prob.

I tried the http://www.apple.com/support/emac/re...ensionprogram/ site for the logic board suggestion you made but the site couldn't be found. But I did do a hard disk analysis some time ago and there seemed to be no issues. But as I have said, I am no techo!

Warm regards

Dick

I don't know why that link doesn't work for you. Here's the relevant info from that page, you can check in your own case.
Affected systems will exhibit one of the following video- or power-related symptoms:

Scrambled or distorted video
No video
No power

The program is available for certain eMac models that were sold between approximately April 2004 and June 2005 featuring 1GHz and 1.25GHz G4 processors.

The affected eMac computers have serial numbers where the first 5 digits fall into the ranges noted below.

Serial Number ranges:

G8412xxxxxx - G8520xxxxxx
YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
VM414xxxxxx - VM518xxxxxx

The problem is mostly related to some parts failures on the logic board, and is not related to anything on the hard drive. If you have any of the symtoms above, you should contact an Apple specialist, or retail shop.

Thanx - my serial number is within your range, and as I live in a country town with bugger all Mac resources, I will try to get in contact with Apple Australia direct. Have a good one!

You can also check if you need to hurry up that process....
Turn your eMac off.
Flip your eMac upside-down.
Loosen the single screw on the small panel on the bottom, and lift out that panel.
You'll see your memory slots, and your backup battery. Look for some small silver cans. Each of those capacitors should be absolutely flat on the top, and no brown 'goo' visible leaking from the can. If you see anything that I describe, it's time to get cracking! Your problems will get worse, I can assure you of that. If you can't see anything suspicious through that opening, that is no assurance of no problem. If you are not experiencing problems with power or video, then let it go, and keep using your eMac.
Good luck with your contact with Apple, hope it goes well for you....

I checked it out Dale - my cans are as sweet. I have no probs with power or video, so it looks like things are OK. But I would still like to know how I can't open some folders.

Have a beaut new year, and thanks again. You good people are saviours to this non-techo Mac lover in a small city with no Mac expertise.

Warm regards

Dale - your comment about me messing around a little is apt and has finally borne fruit.

After much thought, I downloaded a Stuffit 11 and trashed the v10 I was using. V10 must have been corrupted somehow, as I now have no probs in expanding the folders I wanted to.

Have a great new year and thanks again for the time you invested in my problem.

Regards

Dick

Better than the Stuffit software - try The Unarchiver. It works every time for me ( compared to Stuffit working when it 'feels' like it....)
The Unarchiver - http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30810

Wasn't aware of the Unarchiver. Downloading it now. Thanks again for your help. Dick
