TICKET ARCHIVE -> can't open jpeg or zip files on newly formatted ibook

Havve reformatted ibook and am now unable to view jpegs through preview - have have preview default picture viewing file but when trying to open file is 'corrupt'. Open without problems on other machines.
Also trying to open a zip file but freezes up - without problems on other machines.
Do I need to install updates - where do I get these from?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Runnign OSX 10.3.9

Howdy! You probably just need to reset your "Open With" preferences for those types of files. Here's what you do:

Select a jpg and then Get Info on that file. Select an app in the Open With and then click "Change All". Now all jpgs will open with Preview, or other program of your choice.

For zip files you need to repeat these steps and pick Stuffit Expander to open them.
