I updated to OS X 10.4.11 with Safari 3.0.4 today.
Now Safari won't show the YouTube video player, instead showing a dimmed QuickTime logo with a question mark.

I followed YouTube's troubleshooting instructions and verified that in Quicktime Preferences, the "Miscellaneous" option is unchecked in the "MIME Types" box.
Nevertheless, the problem persists.

In addition, I can no longer play streaming audio of the type found here:
http://kpfa.org/archives/index.php?arch=23314

This page also displays a dimmed QuickTime logo with a question mark when it worked fine with the previous version of Safari.

How do I solve this problem?

BTW, I've experienced the same problem in Mozilla FireFox for a long time now.

Question continued:
I uninstalled Flash Player and installed the latest version. This hasn't made any difference -- QuickTime still overrides Flash Player.

I solved the problem in Safari 3.0.4 by disabling streaming movies in QuickTime's MIME settings.

The problem persists in FireFox 2.0.0.9.

Daniv,

There was a similar issue that i've read and discussed with another Macosx.com member.

Try this:
FireFox is not playing streams nor vids with QT - Delete file pluginreg.dat

See if that helps.

Best,

Caribbean,

I deleted pluginreg.dat and restarted the computer.
FireFox still doesn't play Flash streams.
In addition, now Safari is experiencing the same problem again, although streaming movies are still disabled in QuickTime's MIME settings.

There is a pluginreg.dat in both the Mozilla and Firefox directories. Try deleting them both, this had fixed a conflicting issue with the Flash Plug-in.

Furthermore: The QT embedded video you are watching uses java script. Check your preferences for this to be turned on.

These are my versions that are working fine.
Tiger 10.4.11
QuickTime™ Version 7.3.0, Player Version 7.3 (7.3)
Firefox 2.0.0.9
Safari 3.0.4 (523.12)
Flip4Mac 2.1.2.72

Within FireFox if you are watching video content that is a .WMV, quicktime trying to play them without Flip4Mac being functional will not work.

Also you may verify your permissions with Disk Utility.

Notes:
http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_update_main.htm

Send me a link that you are trying to view, with the above settings i can see all streams and any content that is available on the net.

I feel your frustration...i'll do what i can to help solve your problem.

Best CaribbeanOS-X

I had done a search for pluginreg.dat and removed both files the first time. The new file that was generated is only in the FireFox directory.

Repairing the permissions put Safari back in action, but FireFox still isn't playing Flash streams.

Here's a Flash audio stream that I can play in Safari but not in FireFox:
http://kpfa.org/archives/index.php?arch=23314

FireFox doesn't play any YouTube videos. As an example, here's a YouTube video I embedded in my weblog:

Nice blog... love the music! Thanks again for coming to Macosx.com for help.

The YouTube works fine... and that audio stream loads up fine for me.

The audio is actually streamed as a .m3u file, which is a standard streaming format. I have iTunes open when i want to play this.

Have you checked all the versions that i posted above? For example: flip-4-mac etc.?

One step at a time.

I had already check the download actions in FireFox Preferences. There were two unrelated items there, which I deleted.

I had gotten rid of flip-4-mac sometime back, because it was interfering with some streaming WMV films.

ON KPFA there are two ways to listen to music. My preferred way is the Flash Player, which yields higher sound quality on my computer. In FireFox, instead of the Flash Player I see a dimmed QuickTime icon with a question mark.

Below this player, KPFA also provides the m3u for iTunes. The audio signal isn't as strong and clear as in the Flash Player.

Are you up to date with your flash player?

The signal is not as good only due to the compression that it is sent out... infact the .m3u can have exceptional audio quality.

Recap: Flash is not working with firefox? Does everything work with Safari at the moment...YouTube and Flash Audio?

That's it in a nutshell. Safari delivers Flash video and audio. FireFox doesn't.

Before opening this question two days ago, I uninstalled Flash Player and downloaded the latest version. It didn't help.

Daniella:

Try simply deleting the file in the Library:
~/Library/com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
then restart your browsers.

Here is a Thread that had some success stories for most browsers:

Notes:
These codecs can be helpful for video playback as well:

Caribbean,

Thanks for your continuing support.

I removed the file ~/Library/com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist and... this caused Safari to stop playing Flash streams. So I repaired permissions again, and that brought Safari back to normal.

Apparently, the above fix works in Leopard but not in Tiger.

FireFox remains unresponsive, continuing to display the dimmed QuickTime icon instead of playing Flash streams.

Alternative players that I use are VLC and WIMPY FLV Player.

My problem is not in how to play downloaded files but strictly in FireFox's handling of Flash streams.

Daniella:

For some reason FF is still trying to associate Flash with Quicktime Player.

http://oldapps.com/firefox.htm

If you have the time try deleting all associated files with firefox and flash and reinstall an earlier version.

I've seen this problem, and have had success with some of the above solutions. I'll open the ticket to our techs to see if they have other ideas.

Keep in touch.

Kindly,

CaribbeanOS-X

Caribbean,

The link you provided is for Windows & Vista. Mac old apps are here
http://mac.oldapps.com/firefox.php

The latest they had was Firefox 2.0.0.2. I downloaded Firefox 2.0.0.1, but it turned out to be the Spanish version (no warning!). So I gave up,deleted all associated files, and downloaded Firefox 2.0.0.9 again.

The problem is annoying but not critical, since Safari is my default browser.

BTW, Firefox 2.0.0.8 also exhibited this problem on my Mac.

Hope the ticket to the techs yields a positive outcome.

Thanks,

Daniella
