TICKET ARCHIVE -> Can't See Fully Partitioned Maxtor Hardrive With Tiger

Hi,
I have a relatively new (4 months) Maxtor 250GB Onetouch II external hard drive with a fire-wire connection. After upgrading to Tiger, I can no longer see one of the partitions. I had 2 - one for storage and one for backing my iMac G4's internal storage (60GB). It is the storage partition that I cannot see.
When I perform a disk verify, it shows the drive icon as a white piece of paper with a curled corner. It performs the verify and says nothing is wrong. However, when it reads the capacity, it reports the size but does not show any files or remaining capacity - it doesn't show anything.
I highly doubt that I inadvertently deleted the hard drive, but there is no disc image on the desktop for the storage drive as there is for the backup drive. The storage drive is close to full (178 GB capacity), I backup my DVDs to new discs, so I am regularly adding and removing large amounts of data from the storage drive (if that is relevant).
I read on the forums that people have been having problems with Maxtor drives and Tiger. I tried removing the two lines they recommended, but it did not resolve the problem. I did not download the driver someone recommended, since it was from 2003. It would seem that a new product for 2005 should have the latest drivers, or at least those available at the time the product was launched.
As for my competency level, I'm at a basic level. So, directions should be in good detail.
Thank you,
Andrew

What software are you using for storage on the drive?
Are you using Retrospect, or some other backup utility?
Or, are you saving to an encrypted drive image through the Finder?

Hi,
Thank you for responding. I'm not sure which software I used, to be perfectly honest, but my gut says it was Retrospect so I could use the one touch functionality. I'm reasonably sure it is not being saved through an encrypted drive image, since there would not have been a reason to encrypt it (nothing that sacred on it). However, after I left my note yesterday, I tried to run the backup appliction with the umbrella icon to see what would happen and it would not run. (It says "An unrecoverable system error has occurred")
I then went to the Maxtor Applications folder and when I opened it there were no drive images to select (even though the Backup drive partition is showing on the desktop.
Hope this helps you. Thanks for your assistance!

If you are using Retrospect, then look at this Versiontracker.com page
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13108
Partly states this:
'This new of versions of Retrospect, Retrospect Express, and Retrospect Client are REQUIRED for all customers who move to the new Mac OS X Tiger operating system. Prior releases of Retrospect must not be used on Mac OS X Tiger.'
I hope that the backups you have are not already corrupted now, but that is certainly possible. Likely you should try with the new version, but if that doesn't work, you may want to contact retrospect for other possible options, or they may tell you that you cannot recover that data, and you might just toss the files as they are not of any use to you anymore.

Hi Dale,
I checked this out on the site and it looks as though my files may be ok, so long as I don't update to the newer version you referenced. However, I won't be able to access the files using Tiger either. This means I need to go back to my previous OS and and figure out where to go from there. Perhaps you have some suggestions.? There must be a way to back the drive up with something other than Retrospect so that it can be used with Tiger. Never thought I would have to backup my backup.
Thanks again!

Carbon Copy Cloner has been around almost since OS X began. This is some shareware that you can download from versiontracker.com, and is simple to use. Will allow you to back up your whole drive if you need to.

Hi,
Thanks for the info on the shareware. How do I go back to my previous OS? The more posts I read from various places the more I feel like I'm on an emotional roller coaster. Seems a lot of people are having problems with their hard drives and Tiger. For example, I can't recall if I had my hard drive on or plugged in when I upgraded. Some have suggested this could have corrupted the data (such as yourself). Then I suppose there is the possibility that I simply messed it up some other way, unrelated to Tiger.
If that's the case, and not Tiger, would something like Disk Warrior retrieve the deleted data? Nothing has been written over it. Also, when I went to the "Get Info" information again (for the curled paper icon), I noticed that for "Owners enabled" it said "No" I still think it is odd that I can see files on the one partition (the back up storage partition) and not the second partition that had all my files. If it's lost, I'm going to go nuts - I had over 3,000 songs , 1,000 photos, in addition to other miscellaneous stuff. The Photos are archived on DVD, so they are recoverable, but my iTunes will be a nightmare to rebuild.
Thanks again!
