Hi!
I have a small problem..
We have local network in our office, but the only thing i see in Finder/Network are the users online.. I can't see the server itself..
What should i do to connect dirrectly to the server and to see shared folders on this server?
I tried "connect to server" (command+K), but it doesn't work.. i retyped server adress with "smb://" in front, but then i had had an error saying that name or passworg is incorrect.. i could'nt find any way to type in the password because the only option is to write in the server adress without any access configurations..
Please help
Thanks,
Martins.

Martin,
My first question is what sort of server do you have and what operating system is running on it?
Mac / Windows / Linux?

The server has Windows..

OK, same as me which should make things a little easier
If your username or password are incorrect, then open your keychain and delete the saved login details for that server. Then when you try to connect again and you should be prompted to enter your login details for that server.
It can depend a bit on the setup by the server admin, but the Windows server does not necessarily need to be running the services for Macintosh in order for an OS X client to see shared content. So you might not "see" the server when you browse the network (life was so much easier with the Chooser under OS 9) but if it is there and sharing, the SMB protocol should be able to find it. Appletalk is disabed by default in OS X Network preferences panel, so if Mac clients are meant to be using that protocol (probably not), then that would need to be turned on.
(Select the
MAKE APPLETALK ACTIVE tick-box under the APPLETALK tab)
If you are entering SMB://"server name" then it might be that the server name is not resolving corectly or at all.
If you know the server address, type in SMB://"server IP address"
e.g.
SMB://10.1.5.100
Otherwise open
NETWORK UTILITY in the UTILITIES folder in APPLICATIONS
Select the PING tab and enter the server name and hit the [PING] button - either you get a response or you might get 100% packet loss, the latter meaning it cannot resolve the name to a valid address. If it is sucessful with the pings, then use the resolved address in your connection attempt with SMB://"IP address"
That said, if you install Microsoft's User Authentication Module (UAM) then that provides additional interaction options to the Mac client.

let me know how you get on.

Hi!
Still no results..
in "connect to server" i'm entering SMB://
server name/adress is correct..
I instaled UAM as you said.. I tried to ping the server (response is ok)..
But i still can't connect.. message says that password is incorrect, but where can i enter it??
I was hoping that installing UAM will allow me to enter all passwords and stuff..
maybe i should delete all passwords in keychain?

Hi.. I reopened the question, we still can't find any solution how to connect my MAC to our windows server.
I installed UAM, but it didn't change anything
Help still needed
thanks

I think you need to check the login account on your Windows server.
Get the administrator to check that the password has not expired or that your account is not locked out or disabled.

we cheched that.. everything is ok

we even restarted the server..
the main problem is that i don't know where to input that password on macos x:/
where can i do it?
after hitting [command]+K (connect to server) i get a window where i input server adress: smb://..... and after that macos starts connecting.. after that i get a message that password is inncorect:/ but i've never entered the password
please help

Martins,
Rather than using the Connect to Server, use the Go menu and select Network.
The next window that opens will show you the server. Click on that, then click on connect. You should then be prompted for the password.

but i see all the users in local network..

Martins,
Were you able to connect to that server previously? Are there other Macs in the area and can they connect to that server? Are you printing from a printer on the server or just in your workgroup? What OS version are you running?
Open Keychain Access from the Utilities folder. Click on the padlock at the top left to unlock it. Now go to the Keychain Access menu and select Preferences.
When that window opens, click on First Aid. Now make sure all items in this section are checked. Close the preference window.
Now go through the list of keychains and look for smb. If you have one there, you want to delete it. This will force the connection to ask for your password.
Quit Keychain Access.
Now go to System Preferences>Sharing. Click on Firewall. When that opens click on the Advance button at the bottom right.
Uncheck block UDP Traffic and the Enable Stealth mode. Click on okay and close System Preferences.
Now give it a try.

there was nothing containing smb in keychain list
System Preferences/Sharing/Firewall all items were unchecked..

Martins,
After searching for an idea to help you I found several articles that point to the Windows server as the culprit. The volume name has to short and simple. This is also true with the printer. The shared printer name should be short such as laser1 or inkjet2.
As for accessing folders, it could be the permissions on the server that is screwed up. Removing the share and re-applying it would update the Windows directory database.
While I know this requires you going back to the IT guy, this really has to be his job.
I have a couple of web sites that you and the IT guy can read through to help solve the problem.
