I have just spent $$$ with a Xerox repairman to find that my printer is not the problem. I have a Phaser 7750 that has been working wonderfully for the last 2 years in the same environment.
I recently updated both the software driver for the printer and OSX.
I am running OSX 10.4.9 on a PowerMac 733 and suddenly cannot print from InDesign or MSOffice programs. I can print PDFs successfully from Acrobat. I have had the problem in both USB and Ethernet environments.
I am getting and error message in the print queue that says ... "536854447 unable to send data. (Canceled 0)" now and have also had an error message read "The process USB unexpectedly stopped. Unable to send. 237".
In trying to use the Ethernet connection, I also received a message saying something about the job being "timed out".
I am pulling my hair out since I NEED to get up and running, I have found some work arounds, but jobs are looming and I cannot seem to find the solution I need!

I'll guess that OS X, and especially the update process, is faulty. Download the 10.4.9 Combo Updater from Apple and re-update with that.
Next, Reset Printing System, a menu choice in Printer Setup. After restarting the computer you will need to re-Add the printer in Printer Setup.
Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I think my hard drive is almost gone (I ordered a new one ... it will be here on Monday). It took about 8 hours to download the Combo Updater yesterday because the computer is running so slow. It was not my satellite connection, I checked. I'd deleted the Combo Update I downloaded last month anticipating it was corrupted and caused the problem originally.
At any rate, the download did me no good since it was corrupted somewhere in that span of time and the computer wouldn't recognize it.
I tried again this morning, but everything on the computer is sluggish ... so I'm pretty sure I'm getting the precursors to hard drive suicide.
I have an external hard drive, so I transferred everything to it this morning. Now it's a waiting game ... hope it holds out until I get the new drive on Monday.
I did do the Reset Print System prior to contacting you, but I thought I'd do it again even though I'd not been able to reinstall the Combo Update.
Meantime, I'm just turning everythng I have to print into pdfs and printing that way as long as the hard drive holds out.
I will let you know if these measures don't solve the problemm but I appreciate knowing there is some place to go with my frustrations! I rarely have problems, but when I do, they're usually involving a hard drive. This is the second one for this machine. But I've gotten so good at maintenance on this model, I hate to think about getting a new Mac any time soon.
Keep a good thought for me!
Thanks ... Sharon

I keep getting emails about a response ... but as you can see from my posting yesterday, I need to wait to see if the new hard drive and reinstalling the OS will solve the problem and that won't happen until April 16.
But I do have another problem that is connected to this one.
When I tried to reinstall the OSX from the disks, I got an error message that my disk is scratched or dirty ... I wiped it off and checked for scratches ... nothing seems to be there.
My concern is that when I get the new hard drive, I wonder if I'm even going to be able to install the OS from those disks???????
I had to get CDs instead of a DVD from Apple when I ordered it because I didn't have a DVD drive, but since have installed one. Could that have anything to do with the reading of the old media? Any suggestions?
Thanks, Sharon

I have no control over the automatic web site functions - including closing your topic - sorry. As far as I know, if you post another respnse, it will be opened again.
I'd keep trying the install until you don't get that error - maybe you can use the dvd this time.

I just was able to finish the first suggestion ... could download the Combo OS update in a timely fashion and reinstalled it.
Then reset the printer and added it back in again. It printed one set of pages perfectly, but when I went back to print the same pages again, the printer rebooted itself and stopped all jobs ...
I wasn't watching it closely and the error message got passed me ... so who knows what it said this time.
I am depressed. But the hard drive comes tomorrow and I'll reinstall everything and try again. Meantime, I'll keep this open in case something else happens.
Thanks for your perseverance!

Okay, I just tried to print a pdf, which had been printing before I reinstalled the OSX update and reset the printer. But a second error message came through ... it was one I had received in prior attempts as well ... it says ...
"The process 'USB' unexpectedly stopped. With status 237. The print queue stopped the jobs and when I clicked on 'Start Jobs', it printed. But the next time I tried to print, the same thing happened. This is the way I've been able to work around printing for the last week or two ...
Any thoughts? I am still hoping the new repair software or hard drive will work tomorrow!
Oy!

I'm waiting for you to start from scratch.

Keep your fingers crossed that I can even install OSX ... I don't have the DVD because Apple insisted that I turn in that disk to receive the CDs, so we shall see how it goes. Maybe the software I bought to repair the disk will do the trick and I won't have to worry about it. Meantime, all I can do is keep my fingers crossed, too.
More later ... good news I hope!
SharonBoeke - Apr 16, 2007 - 1:27 pm
Well, there's GOOD NEWS even before the hard drive gets here. I wiped off the original OSX Tiger disk and got it to work, then reinstalled JUST the Xerox printer driver over the 10.4.9 combo update. And Voila! I am printing again as usual!
Now I want to know who to blame for this debacle ... I feel as if Apple owes me $$$ for an unnecessary Xerox service call!
But will still install the new hard drive because the issues I'm having with that still exist!
Thanks for the help ... I'm keeping this open until I actually get up and running on the new hard drive ... just in case!
SharonBoeke - Apr 17, 2007 - 12:43 pm
Okay, I did not install the new hard drive ... the TechTool Pro that I ordered along with the new drive, seems to have resolved the problems I was having on the old drive and the printer is working as before the upgrade was installed using the drivers from the original Tiger installation. So, I imagine the printer driver for Xerox printers in the Combo Updater is the culprit.
So, thanks for the help ... it put me on the right path and although I am miffed at Apple a bit, this is the first time since 1990 that I've had an issue with them!
Now I'm toying with the idea of installing the new hard drive in tandem with the old one rather than returning it. Do you have any tips on doing that? I downloaded the instructions from Apple for replacing the drive, but am not sure about how it gets connected to the computer ... do I need a new controller and is there a connection for the ribbon in there or do I need to get something else? I didn't order a controller since I thought I'd be replacing the old drive rather than adding a new one.
Thanks ...

I don't have your model computer, but I think...
You won't need a new controller - there will be an extra hard drive connector and power cable in the computer. I recommend you watch the video(s) at
www.macsales.com Tech Support area, for instructions.

I haven't opened it up yet, too much catching up after the whole debacle with the printer, but it will be easy to check.
I have an Apple Quicksilver 733 ... it's going on 5 years old now, but is always reliable, so I'm hanging in here with it. It is EASY to work on since you open the side and everything is there in the door and the cabin.
I've installed a zip drive long ago and a dvd drive just recently, as well as more RAM, so I'm pretty comfortable with working on it. If I don't have the drive connector, I guess I'll either have to return the drive or order the connector!
Thanks for your help ... I'll leave this open one more day just in case!

Okay, I checked inside the CPU and there is no ribbon connector for the second hard drive bay ... so, I will have to decide what to do along the line ... meantime, I do have a back up hard drive at the ready if the current one does have a melt-down ... it seems to be working well again, so I am in a waiting mode.
Thank you for your input ... I never would have tried the things I did if it hadn't been for your input, so we made a good team! I am up and running again and that was my goal ... now I just have to play catch up with all the work that piled up!
