I tried backing up data from my G5 onto a DVD a coupla days ago. I'd managed it before, but this time (using Toast6) I got an error message (can't remember it) and couldn't back up.
My partner had a look at the G5, said he could write stuff to a Sony DVD-RW, so it must be that my G5 couldn't cope with the cheap DVDs I was using (it coped before).
This morning I put in the DVD-RW and - nothing - the G5 had no idea it was there. I tried clicking the Burn button on my finder winder, just to see what happened and the G5 asked me to insert a blan CD (the DVD-RW was already in there).
So...
am I looking at a hardware problem do you think. Has my DVD writer died - how do I find out. Or is there something wrong with the system?

Kate,
have you tried to erase the DVD-RW before writing to it? You can do this by going to "Recorder" in the menu bar and selecting "Erase".
Please let me know if this solves your problem.

I dare not erase the DVD-RW, when I don't know what's on it. it's my partner's not mine and he's away at the moment and unaskable!
I have tried a 3rd make of DVD, a Maxell this time. I've written down the error messages I get:
sense key=medium error
sense code=0x73 0x03
And there's another error "buffer Underrun Error". I've tried going ito the record settings in Toast 6 to check the buffer underrun prevention box, but that box is greyed out....
...just tried it again and it wasn't greyed out, and it had the name of the dvd writer on one of the tabs this time (it didn't before). I thought this might be the problem solved and tried writing data to a dvd again - but same error, and toast (as usual) crashed and I had to force quit.
Can't burn with Toast or from Finder on three different makes of disk...I'm beginning to think it's my dvd writer that's up the spout...

if you can try using an external or network drive to burn, its a big possiblity that the super drive died. if you know anything about linux or linux apps or terminal commands you could probably mount and burn the disk from comand line but you might need to get an app to do so, but if this dosent work then id say the chances of the drive being broke just went up. if you cant do that, make sure other disks mount, such as music cds, blank cd-r's etc.. if they do then heres a chance you just need to run system restore(i think thats what its called still) which basicaly re installs the os without formating the hard drive, leaving your personal files in tact, however it may require a little searching to find them again.if you cant mount other types of media regularly(every one you try should work as long as its not an xbox/ps2 game or windows software) then the prolem is most likely the drive itself. hopefully this helps at least a little.

the drive can read DVDs and audio cds which gives me hope.
Toast also recognises a blank disc.
iTunes gives me this message when I try and burn - "The device drained its buffer without burn underrun protection"
The Finder recognises a blank dvd and I can drag data to it, but get an error message telling me data cannot be written to this dvd and the dvd is ejected
- unrelated problem? While trying to backup data to dvd, I noticed a second Library folder had appeared inside an folder of ordinary work docs, and, from the dates, seems to be being used seperately but alongside the proper Library folder...help!? Have you any more detailed info in System Restore?
