Hello!

I'm not a beginner nor a professional - something inbetween

The problem i have is the following:

I'm trying to access the ftp server of the (small) company im working for -

I'm using cyberduck (fetch didnt help either).

It all seems to work, loggin in etc. (looking at the status bar at the bottom) but when it comes to accessing the "data list" it stops and after a little while (30secs) gives me the message: "reading timed out" - I tried switching from passive to active, but that doesnt help it either. We use a wifi router by linksys to access the internet. Its all new still, and I'm the only one with a bit of computer knowledge around there HOWEVER I CAN access my own website - maybe because its a simple, cheap account by b-one.net and nothing fancy, professional? another HOWEVER: I CAN access the company ftp server by means of www.webftp.com - but its to slow to download the data I need from the server.

Someone (not to reliable fella unfortunately) said it could have something to do with the router, that it has a firewall that blocks ftp? How come I can access my private ftp account though? I went onto the linksys configuration site, but did not find a box like "ftp firewall" to unselect.

Do you have any clue what it could be? Or what other informations do you require? I'm using a mac mini, wifi connection, its a small firm but the server im trying to access has been setup by its bit bigger sister company in belgium.

Thanks so much for your help already! Please note that even though I need this information for a company, I'm just a friend of the boss, trying to help her out - the pricey possibilty of having a "real professional" (unlike me) come in, is still the last resort.

THANK YOU!

I've had so many errors with CyberDuck I couldn't even count, things timing out that I knew were right. I really suggest you check out Transmit http://www.panic.com/transmit/ It's free for 30 days. I'm not just trying to push an awesome app here, but if you can connect with this then it's definetly just a bug in CuberDuck.
If you can access your personal site through FTP then the protocol is not being blocked, so your friend was wrong. Is the server also in belgim? If that's the case the timeout could be caused just because it's so far away. FTP is a pretty simple protocol and this message is probably just CyberDuck's fault, but we can only be sure if Transmit shows that the server is fine by operting normaly.

first off thanks for the reply!

I downloaded and installed transmit - however the result is the same: according to the status bar at the bottom, it seems to connect and then tries to access the data list (this is where cyberduck and fetch failed) - "almost" opening it (screen changes to "folder style" - but then status bar again shows "connecting to server" and im back to the login screen. What else could it be? Should I complain to belgium or could it well have other reasons?

UPDATE

through a friends help Ive been able to access the ftp through terminal and finder (apple button + k) - but still no clue why cyberduck, fetch, transmit wont work (and need to get it work, the way it is now is too complicated or doesnt allow uploading (finder))

UPDATE 2

PROBLEM SOLVED! For some reason, in the ftp clients, i only had to type czar.be instead of ftp.czar.be --- how odd, you had that problem before?

anyhow, thanks for your time!!

best, Andrej

UPDATE 3

NOPE ITS NOT SOLVED
Turns out the server I accessed had the wrong files on it - its the files we see on the company website, not the company internal "big" files. So Im back to nowhere

any idea?

Since Transmit and the other programs have had trouble connecting to the server, it is most likely a problem with THEIR server. the reason webftp probably worked is they might have a server closer to the one in Belgim, so it didn't cause a timeout. Either way, I suggest you go to an internet cafe' or a friends house and see if they can access the server and download. If you can there, then it's definetly your internet connection or mac(which would require more indepth fixings), or the more likely problem you won't be able to connect there either and it's their server.
