Hey guys,

having some troubles. I have been trying to connect to my PC for ages now and have been having no luck. The odd part is that going from my PC to my Mac works like a charm, its just when I try to log into XP that it wont work.

I followed the instructions to networking XP and OSX from this site: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=54704
but still no luck.

The windows firewall is turned off and I think i'm entering in everything correctly. The error I get when connecting is "incorrect username or password" or something to that degree.

Could it be I set something up wrong on the PC side of things? Could it be the wireless network itself?

I cannot understand what I'm doing wrong, especially since the PC will connect to the Powerbook, but the Powerbook wont connect to the PC.

Please help!

I've had some problems connecting to my PC from my Mac since moving from 2000 to XP. I did see some improvment by turning off simple file sharing on the XP box. I still have some funky issues.
Try the process at the end of this link then get back to me. We'll go from there.

Okay, i've now disabled simple file sharing and set up my folder to share and rebooted...

On the mac, i went to finder, went to go--> connect to server.

I entered in smb://[ip address]/shared and hit connect.

The prompt came up for my password and i enter it...and i get the same bloody error message about username or password being incorrect. it shouldn't be!

this is so bloody frusterating...

is this because I'm on wireless?

i dont know I'm thinking outloud.

If you can see your XP box from your Mac then your physical connection is fine. I believe you said you could connect to the Mac from the PC fine right? IF so then that proves your connection is good.
Since moving to XP I've had tons of headaches trying to connect back and forth. I support about 40 Mac users and roughly 150 PC users on XP. Permissions issues are always showing up.

Try creating a local user account for your Mac User on the PC. Put the Mac User in the Administrators group. Then go to "My Computer"> right click the C: drive > click Sharing and Security > Highlight "Everyone" > On the bottom check full control > click the advanced button > at the bottom check "Replace permission entries on child objects ......"> click OK.

This opens your entire PC up to anyone with a valid log in account on it.

Give that a shot.

one other thing, if I open the finder, navigate to the network folder, open my domain there is an alias to "adampc" (the computer im trying to connect to) however when I try to connect it says the alias cannot be opened because they original item cannot be found.

Okay, lets dig further.
My iBook is running Tiger 10.4.6 and I can copy and view files back and forth from my PIV running XP SP2 all day. If however, I move down the desk to my Dual G4 867MHZ workstation running 10.2.8 I cannot connect to the PC. Likewise, if I try to connect from my Dual G4 1GHz running 10.2.8 Server. I always get the "An error has occured -50".
I looked this up on the Apple knowlege base but found nothing. Past experience however tells me that it does not like the user name or password being used. Since we know the user name and password is correct we have to assume it is a permissions issue. I guess I should ask you what error you are getting vs. assuming it is the same.

Tell me all of the specifics about your systems please. What OS versions, revs, service packs, physical specs etc...
Are you working on a domain or a workgroup?
Are you going through a swictch or a xover cable?
Any Active Directory or LDAP setups?
Are you assigned an IP (DHCP)or are you static?
