Hi, Mike!
Press X during startup. This will force Mac OS X to be the startup system.

Thank you for your quick reply . I tried that as well as control-x and it would not boot. i finally broke down and used the cd to boot it back to the os x (panther). I do have another question for you though. I am trying to get a full backup of the hard disk in this machine and every time it crashes out. I have tried retrospect and silverkeeper with the same results. the backup will begin copying files and go for about 10 mins and then a greyed out screen comes up saying restart the comptuer (has the power button symbol in the background) and i can do nothing from there except reboot. any ideas on what this could be. i am currently diubg the repair on the permissions and am going to try bypassing all startup items to see if this makes a difference. any ideas or input would be most welcome. thank you again for your first reply.
p.s and idea why holding down the x key would not take it back to os x???

It might be that it is not starting up in OSX for the same reason that it is crashing when you try to back it up. Definitely run Disk Utility on your hard drive and see if it fixes any problems.
For a full back up, I actually like to use Disk Utility. It's a bit odd, but if you select the Restore tab, drag your hard drive icon to the Source and the drive you are wanting to copy it to to the Destination. This will do a full backup.

If Disk Utility doesn't work to fix your drive, you might want to try a program called Disk Warrior. Or you could do a clean install and see if that makes a difference.

Let me know if any of this works for you.

Hi Leigh,
The backup is still not working. For some reason the user does not have his os 10.3 cd. i do have a 10.4 cd. is it ok to repair the filesystem with the 10.4 cd or will this cause problems with the filesystem? Thank you for all your help.

Sorry to hear that you are still having problems. It shouldn't hurt anything to run Disk Utility on the computer using the Tiger installation disk. I would definitely try to backup as much of your valuable files as possible.

I will also throw this back into the Open Pool to see if anyone else has any ideas.

I advise turning on the damaged computer in Target mode (reboot while holding the T key down) when connected to a computer that's already on, and connected with a firewire cable.

This will allow you to see the damaged computer on the good computer as a firewire hard drive. Then back up ALL your data from the damaged computer before running Disk Utility.

If Target mode doesn't respond and you can't boot up with the system disk (hold mouse button down on restart to pop the cd tray) then you'll need to "zap the p-ram": on restart/command + option + p + r/let chime ring three times then let go of key combo and allow restart.

Hopefully you can back up your data before you do this, however.
