TICKET ARCHIVE -> Cannot Install Panther On a G4 Ibook After I Installed Tiger
ldmorselli - Jul 14, 2005 - 6:20 pm
Hi,
I just bought a new 12" G4 iBook. It came with Tiger pre-installed.
For a number of reasons, I decided to do a clean install of Tiger, and decided also to create a smaller partition where I'd install Panther.
The re-installation of Tiger went fine, even though there seems to be no possibility whatsoever of chosing what components and bundled apps you want to install (for example, I don't use iMovie or iDVD and I don't need the arabic or the chinese versions of OSX and other apps)...
Then, when I tried to boot on my original Panther CD, I got the 'apple' screen, but then, instead of getting the little 'wheel' indicating that the computer is loading below the apple, I saw the apple move 1cm to the right with a multicolor 1-pixel broad line appearing on top of it. I.e. a nice display bug.
After this, nothing happened. Each time I try to boot on a Panther CD, I get the same thing.
I formatted the disk and partitionned it using the disk utility provided on the Tiger dvd.
I know someone here already had a similar problem while trying to reinstall Jaguar. The advice was 'try with Panther'. Looks like this one won't work either.
Anybody got a clue ?

Check your specs. New machines with Tiger installed may not be able to run Panther or Jaguar. If it does boot Panther it may require a later version of Panther. The latest information I have is on models made in Jan 2005, and they require 10.3.7. That would be the earliest version of Panther you might be able to use on the powerbook.
When you reinstalled Tiger you would have had a Customize option after choosing the method of installation. It's a button on the lower left. Next time you do the installation don't click through the screens so quickly, and you'll then notice the Customize button.
iMovie and iDVD are not part of the Tiger package, I believe. They now come on the iLife DVD.

Thanks Steven for your quick reply.
*For the 'customization', I'll double check, even though I recall clicking an 'options' button (in French) at the bottom of the 'chose installation type' page, which gave me no other option than to chose between a Mac OS extended (journalised) format and a Unix format for my drive - I chose the "erase and install" installation. That suprised me quite a bit, but it was pretty late when I did it, so fatigue must have played its part.
*As far as installing Panther goes, now, ehm... I bought Panther when it came out, which would mean my cds are 10.3.1, right ? How am I supposed to install 10.3.7, then ?
Do you think it'd work if I tried to install Panther on the partition I created for that purpose via an older mac, using the firewire target mode ?

Lorenzo,
After you choose the type of installation and select the destination you should then see the Customize button (not Options) at least in English. I don't know French, so I'm not sure what the French words are that appear. It could be the same, thus the confusion. Next time you do the installation be sure to click the buttons at each screen to be sure you find the one where you can customize the installation.
If you bought Panther at its earliest release the version would be 10.3. I don't know what the last general release version is, but I know it's at least 10.3.4.
If you can install Panther on another computer, then download the 10.3.9 combo updater and install it, then you could connect the two computers via FW target disk mode and clone the system to your new computer.

Thanks Steven.
Found the 'customize button'. Was probably tired that night. :-)
Do you need any particular software to clone your system ?

Yes. You will need backup software capable of creating bootable backups and will work with computers hooked up in target disk mode.
I believe you can use Disk Utility's Restore option, and make the computer without the operating system the target or destination.
Other software that should work includes LaCie SilverKeeper, Synchronize! Pro X, Retrospect, SuperDuper, etc. You'll find them all at versiontracker.com.
