I have several home movie .vob files on my pc that were converted (without my knowledge or consent) to be opened with a VLC media player. I've now transfered these files to my mac but they wont open with quicktime pro. I also really want to import them to imovie but this too wont recognise them. Can anyone help?

Thanks for these links. However I actaully tried the route on the first link with no success before posting this question. When I try to open the file Quicktime says it can't open the file as it's not a movie file? I'm certain it's something to do with the fact that on my pc the file was originally convereted to open with the VLC media player?

Have you tried the mac os x vlc app to see if it will open the file?

I also read reports that Firefox on a pc can open vlc files using the quicktime plug in. Maybe that way you could save a file out and convert it?

No I've not tried the vlc mac app although I did try to convert the files in vlc before importing them to my mac. To be honest I'm not too bothered if I can't open them in Quicktime, I just want to import them into imovie for editing. Any suggestions?

If you can't open them in Quicktime you probably won't be able to open them in iMovie. Quicktime is what you use to edit your clips to then bring them into iMovie. This feature is not built in.

Though you might be able to work with DIVX and avi files:

I recommend trying the VLC converter to mov and you'll be good to go.
