I have installed the freebie of Network Magic. I have installed successfully my main XP Pro PC, my Vista Laptop and Mac OSX 10.4.11. I can see all sharing, PC and laptop print, but Mac will not print. The printer is connected to the PC.
When I look at the Printer Manager on Network Magic on Mac and highlight the HP Colour LaserJet 2550 PCL 6 it says on left hand side. Status: Printer not installed although I have installed the driver and when I complete set up it takes me too choosing printer model, I select Hp then gives me a whole list, I select HP Colour LaserJet 2550 Series but it just takes me back to Complete Setup.
When I looked up problems printing from Mac on Network Magic they did say that there was an issue with HP printers. Would you have a solution or should I forget Network Magic as I only have 2 days left to purchase the software with a £10 discount?
If this cannot be done would I benefit from switching the printer connected to Mac instead of PC or would I have a problem with the PC's?
I am wireless using the AOL Speedtouch router, with Netgear WG111v3 adapter on PC.
Thanking you, in anticipation for you help...
Regards
Julie

See next answer - it wouldn't let me edit.

There a couple of ways to do what you want. I want to first explain that Network Magic is "convenience" software - it doesn't add any capability, it just makes setup easier. You can do what you want without it.
The print issue you are having is driver "mismatch." On the PC, you have used the more-common PCL (HP page description language) driver. But on the Mac, the pre-installed driver uses postscript.
So, one way to fix this is to change driver on the PCs to also use postscript (available, it just defaults to PCL).
Or another way is to install the PCL driver on OS X, which is the hpijs 3-part driver:

Good luck.

I have changed the driver on the PC to postscript and can still print from PC - great.
I still cannot print from Mac through PC. Network Magic still says "printer not installed" although I have installed the driver from the disc supplied with the HP Colour LaserJet 2550L.
When I highlight the shared printer in Network Magic and click the Complete Setup and click information is says that my shared printer does not appear to be supported by the Windows Sharing feature of Mac OS X which refers me to HP website go to downloads and it only gives me Utility download or to purchase CD-ROM (which I haven't done).
What else can I do to get round this?

On the Mac, the preinstalled driver called HP Color Laserjet 2550 Series is the driver for postscript, the driver you installed is for PCL and is a USB-only driver.
If you'd like to go back to the PCL driver on the PCs, then you should install the OpenPrinting driver on the Mac.

I have installed the Open Printing driver on the Mac from the web address you gave me earlier but when I open Printer Setup Utility and click on the Add icon at the top of the Printer List window. A new window opens. In that window, I click the Default Browser icon at the top left. I cannot highlight my printer in the section below as there is nothing there. What am I doing wrong?

Be sure you installed all 3 parts of the hpijs driver.
To get to Windows Printing, click More Printers.

Yes I have installed all three. When I click on "More Printers" I get a selection of: Apple Talk, Bluetooth and Windows Printer - Canon IJ Network, EPSON Apple Talk, EPSON FireWire, EPSON TCP/IP, HP IP Printing and Lexmark Inkjet Networking.
Which one do I select?

Windows Printer.
You can read about this by going to Help > Mac help, and searching for Windows Printer. There are at least two articles that apply to using a Windows-shared printer.

From "Setting up to print to a printer shared by a Windows comp. via SMB/CIFS"
I open the document to print, and choose File > Print.
I choose Add Printer from the Printer pop-up menu, and then click More Printers.
I then choose Windows Printing from the top pop-up menu, choose a network workgroup from the pop-up menu that appears directly below it, I then select a workgroup from the list, and click Choose.
Any Windows printers in the network you've chosen appear in the Printer List. I have no printers in this list and my choose button goes grey.

I'm running out of ideas here...
Please try this: Go to Printer Setup (Fax & Print prefs for 10.5) and find Reset Printing System - a menu choice. Click that and then restart the Mac, and then try Adding the printer again.

I reset Printing System and restarted Mac. Re-installed printers. When I go to + printer in Print & Fax it takes me to Default Browser or IP Printer. In Default I have nothing, if I select More Printers at bottom I have a selection Apple, Bluetooth, Window Printing etc. if I select any it gives me nothing except in Windows Printer which gives me my PC Workgroup, I click on that and choose it takes me back to my Mac if I choose that I have to put in my name and password and it gives me nothing all I can do is cancel! - I shall have no hair by the end of the day at this rate!!!

Well, I admire your perseverance to this point!
Mentioning workgroup reminded me that we can set your Mac to be in the same workgroup as the PC with printer. If you don't remember the PC's workgroup name, find it (on the PC) by right clicking on My Computer > properties > Computer Name tab.
On your Mac, go to Applications > Utilities and open Directory Access. It will probably be locked (grayed out). Click the lock and enter password to unlock. Double click SMB/CIFS. Change workgroup to be exactly what it is on Windows. Click OK and then Apply (relock if you wish).
Now try following this visual guide to Add the printer:

Good luck.
