Hi,

I'm on a graphite-colored iMac DV (400 MHz), running OSX 10.2.8. Recently I bought a new Aiport Extreme. I can go online with no problems, but when I try to print by connecting the prineter (HP Photostmart 7150) to the Airport Extreme, the printer only prints the top of the page and then stops and just sits there.

It prints fine if connected with a cable directly to the iMac.

When I go to the Airport Admin Utility, and click Configure, I get the following message: "The AirPort Admin Utility was unable to read the configuration of the selected base station. An error occurred while reading the configuration."

I hope someone can help.

Thank you.

How come my question was closed? I never received even one reply. Was there some kind of a mix up?

Sorry about the mixup...

Anyways, in order to configure (setup) an airport extreme and the attached devices, you need to be running Mac OS 10.4.8, according to http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/specs.html

Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

Also: to use the shared printing feature, you need to be on mac os x 10.2.7 or later

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I will purchase OSX 10.4.8 in the next few days. As soon as it's installed, I will try to configure Airport Extreme and will let you know whether it solves the printing problem.

By the way, is there anything I need to do to safeguard my files before I upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.4.8?

Thank you.

Wait-

Don't buy it now, unless you really need it. Within the next few months, OSX 10.5 (an upgrade from 10.4) will be available.

You will want a full system backup before you install the upgrade. I am not really good with upgrading, so I am going to reopen your ticket for another techie...they can explain the upgrade process better to you.

Hi,

Thank you for your response. As I understand it, OS 10.5 will not be able to run on G3 Macs. That's why I bought the 10.4.

Good Morning,

Contrary to my learned colleague, I would not wait for Leopard as you would need to upgrade everything you have first. I'm afraid even 10.4 (Tiger) is beyond you realm as you first will need to upgrade your memory to a minimum of 256MB and perhaps even need to change drives if you don't have at least 5GB free.

I m assuming that since you have yet to configure your Airport Extreme that you have a Cable Provider for your internet service. Since the Airport is configured for DHCP out of the box you have likely not had to run the Airport Setup Assistant?

The link provided above is actually for the new Airport Extreme (N) model which will ship in a few weeks. I assume that the one you have looks more like a stereotypical "space ship" than the one in the link above. This requires 10.3.9 to configure correctly and once at 10.3.9, you would want to check Software update for Airport 4.2 updates. Once completed this should allow you to se Airport Admin Utility to configure the printer correctly. 10.3 will run with your current config.

As for the upgrade itelf, the best idea is to make sure your syetm is as clean as possible before you do the upgrade. There are a few steps that will make things go smoothly.
1. If you have a utility like Diskwarrior, run it.
2. Launch Disk Utility and repair permissions.
3. If you have moved anything around ie: moved any application from it's default location likely HD/Applications, then move it back.
4. Run a utility such as YASU to clean out all your stored, and out-of-date cache files

Once it's clean, if you have one, connect a firewire drive an "clone" your existing system with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. This way if something goes terribly wrong you have a perfect copy of your current set-up and can even boot from it if necessary.

Then you can simply restart fro Disk 1 of 10.3 and let the installer do the upgrade knowing your safe if something happens.

Cheers,

Ian

Hi Ian,

Thank you for your detailed reply. I already purchased 10.4, because I do have 640MB of RAM and 7GB of free hard drive space.

Regarding the upgrade to Tiger 10.4... Where does one get all the utilities that you mentioned -- Diskwarrior, YASU, SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner? Are they shareware?

I have Norton Utilities, but it stopped working for some reason.

Thank you.

Hi,

Good to hear about the memory, the system info shown to me said you had 128MB. The more ram the merrier!

Diskwarrior is a commercial application from Alsoft
www.alsoft.com

If you buy anything for your Mac , this should be it!

Yasu is Shareware and can be found at
http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/

SuperDuper is also Shareware and can be found at
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDup...scription.html

Norton is no longer made and the last version it ACTUALLY supprted was 10.2.3. If you still have the CD, you might want to consider just pitching it so as not to mistakenly use it. It will cause bad things to happen if you can even get it to launch.
