I just bought a VGI Mobile Drive 4 Gb USB2, and it says it is Mac OS compatible 9 and X. I have an iMAc G5 running OS 10.3.6 The drive mounts and I can open a window for it but when I try to drag a file into it I get a message that the VGI Mobile cannot be modified.

Get Info says it is Read Only.

I used Disk Utility to verify it and it says the OS is MS-DOS file transfer and permissions are not enabled.

Is there a way I can copy to this drive or must I return it?
If I can't use it, what similar product can I use?

It's not very helpful that VGI doesn't have a web page.
Thank you, Dianne Clowes

Many flash drives have a little (nearly hidden) lock switch that will prevent the drive from being over-written. Hopefully, if that's switched, the drive will be writable when you plug it back in.

Try formating the drive in Disk Utility to Mac Extended.

Hi Luc, thanks so much- that worked. I wondered what that switch was for.
Bobw suggested reformatting into Mac Extended. It is still formatted MS DOS. should I reformat or leave it alone?

If you're going to use it for Mac software, then format it for Mac, otherwise leave as is.
