I have a Macintosh 1 GHz PowerPC G4, 1MB L3 cache, 512 MB DDR SDRAM running OS X Version 10.4.10.

I recently bought a Canon Pixma iP4300. All was well until I tried to print a label on a DVD using the supplied software, CD-LabelPrint. It refused to print and presented the following error message:

Error Number 1851
Printing cannot be executed because the Inner Cover is open.
1. Check that the CD-R tray has been removed.
2. Close the Inner Cover, and then press the RESUME button on the printer. Printing will restart.

Well of course the inner cover was open. You have to open it to insert the CD-R tray. I checked all the settings:

Under Page Setup I selected "Format for: iP4300", "Paper size: CD-R Tray F", "Orientation: Portrait", "Scale: 100%".
On the Print Label Sheet under "Printable Label" I selected "All" (and on a subsequent attempt I tried "selected").
On the Print dialog box I selected "Quality & Media / Printable disc (recommended)" (and on a subsequent attempt I tried "Printable disc (others)").

I've tried every permutation of the above settings, always with the same result: Error Number 1851. I downloaded the latest versions of the printer driver and CD-LabelPrint, and again, Error Number 1851. I triple-checked the printer manual to see if I was inserting the disc correctly. I was.

Am I doing something wrong or is my new printer a dud?

Desperately yours,
Doug Howard

Hi Doug!
After reading your post, I think you are trying to print directly to a CD!

This will not work, as your Pixma iP4300 does not have that capability. It _can_ print to the pre-formed type of labels, which are simply gummed labels on a sheet that feeds normally through the printer. Those work quite well, although some users have problems with those labels because the disk might be too thick for certain drives to work properly. Anyway, I don't recommend those type of stick-on labels.

Some printers do have that capability to print directly to disk, but I don't know which Canon models will support that.
This answer might not 'help' you, but I just hope that, with more information, you can make your next purchase with less frustration!

Hi Dale

I am indeed trying to print directly to a CD and the Pixma iP4300 DOES have that capability. Or at least it's supposed to. I haven't had much luck so far.

Thanks anyway
Doug

Sorry, I apologize. I tried to convince you that an iP4300 does not support printing to CDs. The US model absolutely does not, also comes with no software that will do that, and makes no mention of CD printing, So I wanted you to think that yours also does not.
I see that the iP4300 available in other countries (such as the UK) certainly support CD printing.
Have you verified that you have the current version of the CD LabelPrint and the Canon driver software? You can check at the support area of the Canon web site. Don't rely on the software that came with your printer, always check at the web site for newer versions. I don't know if that will help, but updates often fix bugs!
going back to your original question - Are you sure that the _inner_ door needs to be open? Is that the only way to insert the tray used for CD printing? Have you re-checked the manual to make sure about this?
I suppose all three questions will get a _Yes_, but I don't like to assume that you have tried everything. The only reference that I could find to that 1851 stated that the printer won't print because the inner door is open (which is what you see!) So, I'm guessing that the inner door _must_ be closed in order to print. Is there any way to do that and still have the CD in printing position in its tray?
I'm just throwing several questions out, and you might find that one of them helps you ! (I hope!)
Let me know how it goes...

I didn't know that the Ip4300 varies from one country to another. I'm writing from Sydney, Australia.

In response to your queries:
I am using the current version of the CD LabelPrint and Canon driver software.
The slot that accepts the CD-R tray is concealed behind the inner door so obviously the inner door must be open. Once you have inserted the tray it's impossible to close the inner door. You can't print to paper if the inner door is open, and you can't print to a CD-R if the inner door is closed.
Thanks
Doug

So, the CD tray should be closing a switch that the inner door actuates when it is closed. (I'm guessing here!)
If I had your printer - I would check along the edge of the CD tray to see where the 'door-closed' switch is located. There must be one, if the printer is good when the inner door is closed (no CD tray installed).
Therefore, the CD tray is missing the 'door-closed' switch because:
the printer is bad.
the cd tray is bad
or, you have missed something (probably simple) in the CD tray setup. Be sure to double check your manual.

Or, you may be in warranty for the printer - try to return that.

Problem solved! Computerhope.com directed to the following page:
http://pixma.ulmb.com/index.php/181/...-mac-os-x.html

And here's an excerpt:
"Make your design, or import an image for your layout in the sotware. Click the Print button and do all that says on the promts, like choose the right printer (iP3400), the CD-R Tray F format, and then in the print dialog, choose by Quality & Media Printable disk (recommended) and the default Disc tray (and if you print photo’s on the disks, choose to print top quality photo’s).

Then save as a PDF in the left bottom dialog of the print dialog. This is key to the workaround for us Mac Users!

Open the pdf-file in the Preview software that comes with Mac OS X, do the same settings as above, an then print it. It’ll now work perfectly to print on your disks. No evil error messages anymore, and I did 4 disks in a row after this solution. So the problems looks like a compatible issue with Mac OS X version 10.4.9 and the latest version of CD-LabelPrint software, version 1.5."

To which I might add make sure you reset Page Setup from within Preview before printing.

A slightly fiddly workaround but it works.

Thanks again,
Doug Howard
