I have a Windows desktop and have a hp psc 1315v connected to it. It is shared over the network. The windows laptop prints just fine, but the apple macbook pro dosnt. It sees there is a printer on the network, but wont print. I try to set the model for it, but its not there. I downloaded the drivers many times and nothing happens. I tried the gutenprint drivers also. Nothing changes. What do I do?

The driver from HP will NOT work - it was written to use USB ONLY.

The only chance I see is to install hpijs and ESP ghostscript from :
http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/O...g/MacOSX/hpijs

The 1315 isn't specifically listed, but the 1310 driver is supposed to work.

The workaround Satcomer mentioned in the main forums should be workable. Here's the difference - in the winmacprinter method, you will send postscript from the mac to the PC to be translated for the printer. In the hpijs method, the Mac will do the postscript translation and you'll have control of most variables like print quality.

I tried installing the programs but the instructions are for usb. when I try to get the files for my PC it cant find the files. Any other ideas? Maybe a printer that will work this way?

After installing hpijs and ESP ghostscript packages, follow this guide:

The Print Menu? So, you mean that you were able to Add the printer in Printer Setup Utility, but when in an application and trying to print, an error pops up and says can't find the printer?

Is the windows computer sleeping or off when this happens (needs to remain on)?

Its on all the time. OSX can see the printer when you add it, but it says it cant find it when I print.

Please try this troubleshooting: go to the Terminal Utility and type:
smbclient -NL [IP address of the server PC]

This should tell us what the Mac "sees" using Windows sharing. Please cut and paste it here.
(you can overtype xxx's if anything is sensitive info)

That definitely shows the shared printer. And the shared name is hhpsc131. Try this - In Printer Setup click Add and the hold down the Alt/option key while clicking More Printers. Select Advanced from the bottom of the menu and then select Windows printer via Samba. Enter this for the URI:
smb://192.168.1.4/hppsc131

Select the hpijs driver and finish and then try it.

Please check that you have enabled printer sharing in the Windows firewall - or just turn it off.

HOW DO I DO THAT?
gsahli - Mar 3, 2007 - 9:44 am

On my WinXP computer (updated to SP2), I go to Start > Control Panels > windows Firewall. You can turn the firewall off if you have a wired-only network (because the router has a better firewall). If you have a wireless router, leave it on but go to the Exceptions tab and turn on/allow file and printer sharing.

If you still can't print, I'm sorry that I haven't been able to help you. I suggest you try network printing at a different location, and if it also gives these results, you'll probably need to reinstall OS X using the Archive & Install option in the installer. (If a file is corrupted, we don't have tools to identify which one it is.)

EDIT - I should have also asked you to try this: Download the 10.4.8 Combination (Combo) Updater and re-update with that. This is a common troublesooting method, because Software Update isn't very reliable.

Please tell me which requirement your computer doesn't meet - you need to read about that on the download page. If you aren't able to figure that out, you need to take your computer to an Apple Store and have them figure it out.

There is one more thing you can try - this is related to having an Intel Mac. Find Printer Setup Utility in Applications > Utilities. Single-click to highlight it and then Command-i (apple key + i) to Get info. Find the menu item open using/with and select open using Rosetta. This makes Printer Setup work with some old power PC drivers (like possibly hpijs, but I don't have this issue). Then try Adding and printing again.

The Combo updater is a commonly-used troubleshooting technique, recommended by Apple. It is applied OVER any other previous updates, unless you had previously applied the Combo Update. You can force your computer to accept the Combo Update by going to Library/Receipts and dragging the MacOSXUpd10.4.8xxx file to the desktop and then running the update.

This is a last chance effort -- if this doesn't help, I recommend you reinstall OS X using the archive & install option in the installer. The reason for all of this is that I believe you must have a corrupted file that prevents print sharing from working.

Did you ask for help with printer sharing while at the Apple store?
mactop - Mar 11, 2007 - 2:23 pm
image
image
I did. They said that it just dosnt work. I asked about the update and he said that it wont work either becase I have that update already. Infact, this is a new computer and it still wont. Windows has a repair option, does OSX?
gsahli - Mar 11, 2007 - 3:49 pm
image
image
OK, I think I understand - the computer came with a customized (per new model) 10.4.8 installed - there is no update for it.

My only remaining recommendation is to reinstall OS X using the Archive & Install option in the installer. This option replaces all system files but leaves your user files and Applications intact. The only caveat is, if you have any application that puts files in the system areas, you may need to uninstall and reinstall that (other people have said one or two apps need reinstalling - I don't know which ones).

so what would I need to do for this?

Put the install DVD in and restart the Mac, holding the C key down until you're sure the computer is using the DVD. Start the installer, but keep an eye out for the "Options" button in the upper left of the installer dialog. As soon as you see this Options button, click it and choose Archive & Install. Then complete the install. You will get an extra folder "Previous System" - or something like that. It will be safe to trash that only after you know your laptop is working normally.
