Luther,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

Go to the System Preferences (light switch in the dock) and open Universal Access.
When that opens, in Seeing make sure Voice over and Zoom are off. Now click on the Keyboard button and make sure Sticky Keys if off. Finally click on Mouse and make sure Mouse Keys is Off.

Now close the window and give your keyboard a test run.

Cheryl, Thank You! I still cannot type a shift capital s on that computer. It is a G4 running Tiger. I can make lower case s and use case change to make it a upper case. If it is a proper noun, spell check will change, but I can't type it. Thanks, Luther

Luther,

Do you remember when this started? Did you install any programs just before this happened?

Is it just the s that is causing grief?

It happened after installing Tiger OS 10.4, but I have not installed anything else on that computer. I put OS 10.4 on my PowerBook and the upper case S works fine. I thought it was the keyboard, but the new one does the same thing. Thanks for your help. Luther

Luther,

When you installed Tiger, do you recall which method you used? Update, Archive or Clean?

It could be just a corrupt file within the system. Try this and see if it corrects the issue.

Start up with the OS X disk (Tiger) and do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer menu and select Disk utility.
When that opens click on the second icon in the side bar at the left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom right.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.

Now click on Repair Permissions.

When that is done, quit Disk utility and restart the computer.

Thanks for your continued help. This drives me crazy when I can't solve something. I could not start from the Tiger disk without it going straight to Install. I started up on another drive and use Disk repair to check the disk that I normally use for start up. After several runs it continues to say the disk needed no repair. I tried my upper case s but it still will not type. I have not found any other letter that does not work. Thanks, Luther

Luther,

You have eliminated a keyboard problem, as it still happens on a new keyboard. Disk Utility finds no problem.

My next thoughts would be a corrupt font. Or a font that is missing all the parts.

Does this happen in all programs or just one? If it happens in Safari, go to the Preferences (in Safari menu) and select Appearance. What fonts do you have listed in there. This will help determine what font is having trouble.

P.S. When you use the OS X disk to start up the computer to use Disk Utility, you do not click on the installer screen. You have to use the Menu - Installer Menu to open Disk Utility.

It happens in safari and the fonts I use are New Your and Courier. I tried changing my fonts in Ms Word, but it happens in all fonts.
When I start up with the Tiger DVD, it opens with asking for a language and then goes to agree and installing. I do not get a chance to choose until options. I looked in options, but there is no Disk Utility in Options. Thanks for being so patient. Luther

Luther,

Go to Applications>Font Book.
When that opens, there will be a side bar With All Fonts title listed first. Click on that.
The second column will list all the fonts. Scroll down to Courier and click once on it. Now go to the File Menu at the very top of your screen and select Validate font.
When it is done, a new window will open. It will list the font and give either a check mark, exclamation point or a red x, to the right of it.
Do the same with New York.

If the validation comes up with anything other than a check mark, disable that font. Then let me know immediately.

As for Disk Utility on the CD, it is not in the install screen. When the install screen comes up - it is the first thing that comes up when you start up the computer with the OS disk, look at the very top of the screen. You will see to the left menu items. Under Installer is Disk Utility.

Luther,

What I need you to do is create a new user. Then log in as this user and see if the problem still exists.

Go to System Preferences>Accounts. Click on the pad lock if it is locked. You will be asked for your password.
Now click on the plus sign. You will be prompted to create a new user name and password. Make sure you click on the allow user to Administer this computer.

Now double check in the Login Options (under the list of users) to make sure you have it set to show users - and not automatic login.

Close the System Preference window and go to the Apple Menu and select log out.
Now log in with the new user you just created and give it a test run.

Does the s show in capital?

I get upper case S when logged into the new account. When I go back to the old account I can't. Any way to fix my original account? Thanks, Luther

Luther,

Sorry about not replying sooner. We has some severe storms come through my area and lost power for a while.

Now we know that the problem is not system wide.

Log in to your original account, and go to Home>Library>Preferences.

First open the By Host folder and locate and trash the following:
com.apple.systempreferences.{numbers & letters}.plist
com.apple.systemuisserver.{numbers & letters}.plist

Now, go back to the Preferences file (in Home>Library) and trash all the com.apple. xxx.plist files.

Log out, then log back in with the original user. Empty the trash.

You will need to reset your some of your preferences so double check the system preferences. Now give it a test run.

Cheryl am I looking for com.apple. xxx.plist files or does xxx. stand for all com.apple files? Thanks, Luther

Luther,

I am sorry, I should have explained that com.apple.xxx.plist meant all the com.apple files.

Cheryl, I am so discouraged. I did this and still no capital s. I have never had a Mac problem I couldn't solve. I have two other Mac computers and a couple of PCs, but I use this one a lot. Thanks, Luther

Cheryl, I just accidentally solved the problem. I was trying a Shift S in AppleWorks. When I pressed it the computer started to read your email, which I had open. I went to Speech and turned off Speak Selected Text. What is strange is that I checked this several times and it was not selected.
I can't begin to thank you for your hard work and help. Without you, I would never have solved it. I wish there was a way I could make it up to you for all your time and effort. A thanks seems so little for all you did for me. Luther

Luther,

I completely forgot about the Speech panel. But I am glad that you found the culprit, even if it was by accident. I am surprised that speech was not 'reading' the text while you were typing.

You can now delete the new user you created.

I would not worry about making it up to me. I am here to help Mac users.

I have a new problem. I want to have a Read Receipt (actually my boss does) for Mac Mail. I tried using MailPriority 1.4.1. It worked on my computer, but I can't get it to work for the boss - not good. He is running 10.3.9 Any suggestions on how I can make him happy? Thanks, Luther Beal

Luther,

First, you should email the developer of MailPriority.
david.frank@tiscalinet.ch

He would be able to help you get it set correctly. Remember to give him the version you are using, and the OS version on your boss's machine.

Or - you could try Eudora for OS X. I know that has return receipt.
