Ok i have a intel mac g5 with a superdrive internal and an lg dvd rom burner external and when i put in black dvds or cds it says they are not recognized, i have tried reseting permissions and nothing seems to work, i have tried every kind of dvd and cd known to man so, if you could help me out that would be great.

Chris,
That external drive is probably confusing the system because it more than likely is not a drive that works with OS X.
Get Toast from Roxio
http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/to.../overview.html
Once installed, it should work to recognize your external as well as your superdrive.
After installation, go to System Preferences>CDs & DVDs. In the pull down menu at the first two options select Open Toast.

Chris,
First log into the admin account if you have multiple accounts.
Go to the Utilities folder (in Applications) and start up Disk Utility.
What that opens it may take a few moments for it to gather information on the drives.
Now click on the second icon in the side bar at the left. This icon should have your hard drive name listed.
Click on Repair Permissions. Repair Disk will be grayed out.
When done, quit Disk Utility and give the disk drives a try out and let me know if that corrects the issue.

no i have tried that several times, i am only able to redo permissions to the harddrive i think if i could do them to the drives themselves that would work but it doesnt have any affect.
Cheryl - Dec 24, 2006 - 10:19 am
Chris,
Actually, when repairing permissions it corrects the permissions of the devices as well.
When you put in a data CD or DVD, does the drive 'see' it? Have your tried starting Toast first, then inserting a blank CD or DVD?
Have you tried restarting the computer? This may 'wake up' those drives.
Have you installed anything just before this happened?

i does recognize dvds cds or data disks just fine, i have tried restarting numerous times and ruuing toast before as well, i may have installed something but not that i know of or can really credit the problems to

Chris,
Did you install the latest security update or the 10.4.8 update?
Go to the Utilities folder and open System Profiler.
In the side bar at the left you should see several sections. The first is Hardware. If the list under Hardware is not showing, click on the arrow next to it so it will point down and expand the list.
Click on Disc Burning.
What does the profiler state?
One more thing to check. Go to hard drive>Library>Quicktime.
You should have two files in that folder. Let me know what those files are - if you have them.

Chris,
Everything looks in order. Your superdrive does not need a firmware update, but have you installed the firmware update for the iMac?
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...eupdate11.html
Do you have the update to Toast? This update will make the version X 7.1.2
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6351
Can you remember if it was an Apple update that you installed just before this happened?
