Margi,
First, it could be you have the CDs & DVDs control panel set incorrectly. Go to System Preferences (light switch in the dock) and click on CD's & DVD's.
Each line should be set to what you want it to do when you insert each kind of media. Specifically, the music CDs should be set to open iTunes. A picture CD should be set to open iPhoto.
At the top, blank CDs and DVDs should be set to open Disk Utility to burn - unless you have a third party burn application like Toast.
Once you have this set, close System Preferences and give it a test run.

Margi,
Click on the desktop, then go to the Finder Menu and select Preferences. Click on the General icon and check to see that hard disk and CDs, DVDs and iPods are checked to show on the desktop.
Did this just happen or has this always been the case? What model Mac do you have and do you know if you have a Super Drive optical on the machine? Not all Mac models have the ability to burn CDs and/or DVDs.
Are the music CDs you have commercial or created by someone? Are the music CDs regulation size or the mini? Have you checked to make sure the CDs do not have dirt or fingerprints on it?
Are you set to be the administrator of the machine or just a user? It could be that if you are a user you do not have permissions set to run certain CDs. This would be found in System Preferences>Accounts.
One more thing. Go to Utilities and open Disk Utility. When that opens it will take a few moments for it to gather the information. When it does you will see icons at the far left in the side bar.
Click on the second icon, then in First Aid in the main window, click on Repair Permissions. Repair drive will be grayed out.
When done, quit Disk Utility and give a music CD a try.

Margi,
Since this problem started two weeks ago, did you install something just before this started? Can you remember what you did just before this problem began?
That will be the clue as to what is causing the problem. Have you tried opening iTunes, then inserting a music CD?

i've already checked those settings. a dvd will open the dvd player, and application cd's will mount on desktop. But thats it. Music cd's won't open Itunes or mount on desktop, same with blank cd's.

Margi,
What I think is happening is the mp3 player is confusing your computer and not allowing itunes to play CDs.
Do you have any music saved on your computer other than mp3's(like from the iTunes Store)? If so it would be stored in Home>Music. click on one file, then go to the File menu and select Open With... Select iTunes. This should make it the default now.
Open iTunes and go to the iTunes menu and select Preferences.
When that opens, click on Advanced then Importing.
The first option says On CD insert... select Begin playing.
Now give a music CD a try.

HI CHERYL,
MY RESPONSES ARE IN CAPS. I THOUGHT YOU ALMOST HAD IT WITH THE DISK PERMISSIONS...BUT IT DIDN'T WORK.
Click on the desktop, then go to the Finder Menu and select Preferences. Click on the General icon and check to see that hard disk and CDs, DVDs and iPods are checked to show on the desktop. THEY ARE CHECKED
Did this just happen or has this always been the case? What model Mac do you have and do you know if you have a Super Drive optical on the machine? Not all Mac models have the ability to burn CDs and/or DVDs. THIS JUST STARTED ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. BEFORE THAT EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I HAVE A G4 FLAT PANEL MAC RUNNING MAC OX 10.4.7, NOT SURE WHETHER ITS A SUPER DRIVE OPTICAL OR NOT,
Are the music CDs you have commercial or created by someone? Are the music CDs regulation size or the mini? Have you checked to make sure the CDs do not have dirt or fingerprints on it? COMMERICAL CD'S. NORMAL SIZE CD'S. NO SCRATCHES OR FINGERPRINTS, IN FACT I'VE TRIED SEVERAL DIFFERENT CD'S
Are you set to be the administrator of the machine or just a user? It could be that if you are a user you do not have permissions set to run certain CDs. This would be found in System Preferences>Accounts. I AM THE ONLY USER ON THE COMPUTER. ITS MY HOME COMPUTER.
DID THIS. GOT A LOT OF "CORRECT PERMISSIONS"..THEN TRIED A CD...NO LUCK!
When done, quit Disk Utility and give a music CD a try. STILL DIDN'T WORK.

The only thing I can remember doing was I installed window media player for Mac OX. And that was a recommendation from a Myspace.com affiliate who was trying to help me get a mp3 player to work on my myspace page. At the same time, because the window player didn't solve the problem I found a Safari plug-in called Flip4Mac that solved my mp3 problems. But then at the same time I found another site that offered unlimited songs on a mp3 player, so i choose that one instead. The 1st site that had me install the windows player was Herban.com the 2nd (and the one I currently have on my myspace) is from Projectplaylist.com. Cheryl, I'm off to work now, so I won't be on this computer, but you may continue to email me at my work...mardito@consrepro.com.
Thanks so much for all your help so far.........

Margi,
Did you install Flip4Mac? If so, uninstall it.
Version 2.x provides an uninstaller to remove Flip4Mac from your system. It is located in the Applications>Flip4Mac folder. Just run the uninstaller and Flip4Mac will be removed from your Mac! Any license file previously installed will remain.
For Version 1.x, remove the following files from your system
Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins folder
Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.plugin
Flip4Mac Plugin.webplugin
Macintosh HD/Library/PrefPane folder
WmvPlayer.prefPane
Macintosh HD/Library/PrefPerferences folder
net.telestream.wmv.import.plist
net.telestream.wmv.plugin.plist
net.telestream.wmv.export.plist
Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime folder
Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts folder
Flip4Mac WMV Player Installer.pkg
Flip4Mac WMV Export Installer.pkg

Margi,
My hunch proved wrong. Let's try one more thing before doing a reinstall of the OS.
Go to system Preferences>Accounts. Create a new user. Just click on the + button at the bottom left of the window, then give the user a name and password and allow the user to have Admin privileges.
Click on the padlock at the bottom left of the window to unlock it. You will need to type in your password.
Now click Login Options.
Uncheck Login Automatically and select List of users under the Login Display.
Close System Preferences and then log out of your user from the Apple Menu>Log out.
Now log in to the new user. Give a music CD a try out.
Let me know what happens.

Margi,
This is getting very frustrating. The CD drive is working because it can 'see' data CDs.
Between all the stuff you have done so far, have you restarted the computer? If not, try that and see if a restart (in your original account) will it 'wake up'.
If that does not work, then an archive and preserve install just might work.
Start up from your Mac OS X Install DVD. If you have different versions of Mac OS X Installer discs (for example, if your computer came with version 10.3 and you later purchased and installed version 10.4), start from the disc that most closely matches the installed Mac OS X version. Usually, that's the latest (newer) version.
Just insert the DVD/CD, restart the computer and immediately hold down the C key.
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.
After the restart, give a music CD a try out.
Let me know how you do.

Hi Cheryl,
No luck, but I haven't given up yet. I did everything you said to do in the last 2 emails. And nothing. I've even gone as far as resetting keychain passwords, deleting plug-ins, uninstalling flash players and even cleaned out a bunch of space, thinking maybe I needed more memory for the cd drive. And still nothing. Just short of reformatting the hard drive and starting from scratch and reinstalling mac ox....not sure what to do next.
