Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: PPC 6500/250
RAM: 48meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8

Description:
PROBLEM: Starting the Mac with only the CD-ROM extension enabled in order to install an application from a CD-ROM.

I tried to use an untested set* of extensions that I had created, but the Mac refused to complete start-up and froze. (*Set used: Apple CD-ROM, Color Sync, Sound Manager, Video Startup, World Script, šAppleVision)

I called Apple (paid the charge). We tried several measures to permit CD-ROM only re-start, but couldn't get the desired startup. Apple's set: Appearance control panel; Apple CD-ROM and Foreign File Access extensions. We ran Disk First Aid and Norton, but neither reported any problems. The techhie concluded that there was a corruption somewhere in my System software and that I should do a clean re-install of OS 8.0. (I have had NO other crash or freeze problems lately. I do run Norton CrashGuard v.3.5.1.)

NOTE: When I installed OS 8.0 from Apple's CD several months ago, I recall that it was necessary to have AppleTalk ON to enable booting from the OS 8.0 CD (even with Cmd-C pressed). Is it possible that the Apple tecchie might have overlooked this "fix?"

I REALLY REALLY don't want to reinstall OS 8!

Add the Appearance Extension and the Text Encoding Coverter to the set Apple told you to use. Another thing you could do is to make a copy of or Disk Tools floppy, remove Disk First Aid and Drive Setup Lite to make room, then copy the CD-ROM extension to the extensions folder on the floppy. Then startup from the floppy.
