TICKET ARCHIVE -> Cd Won't Mount

My iBook G4 hard drive failed two weeks after the one year warranty ran out. I sent it to Apple, who assured me they would return it with the data on it. However, I paid $300 and Apple returned it with a new hard drive and had lost all my data. Don't trust Apple!

Now I'm trying to restore some of my data from a CD I burned several months ago. I have used this CD-RW several times. But now when I put my CD into the computer with the new hard drive (and possibly a slightly newer operating system), the CD does not pop up on the desktop.

I have used an external drive and had the same problem. I can open other CDs.

I ran Disk Utilities. This lets me see the names of the sessions I've burned and there seems to be a large file saved, but I still can't make the CD mount.

How can I make it work so I can access my data?

And what is my recourse against Apple for telling me I'd get my data back and then tossing out my old hard drive without even attempting data recovery?

A few comments:

Apple has a standard disclaimer that they are not responsible for the contents of your hard drive when you send your Macintosh in for repair. Whoever told you otherwise misspoke. Apple does not provide a data recovery service.

Did you burn the CD using Apple software or Toast? If you used Toast, try to read the CD with Toast.

If you burned the CD with Apple's software and remember the version, try to install that system version on any Macintosh with a CD drive and see if your backup CDs will mount.

Startup with the shift key held down to disable most third party login items (it will disable some of Apple's as well). See if the CD mounts.

If you're really familiar with Unix, you can use the Terminal app to try to mount the CD, but I would try the above options first.

Finally, and this may sound dumb, but do you have the option checked in Finder's prefs to show CDs, DVDs, etc. on the desktop? I've made that mistake and panicked (a bit).

HTH.
