Mate of mine has an iMac G3, 400Mhz, 9Gb, 256 Mb RAM.
All of a sudden, when he inserts a CD (internal drive or external CD/RW), it doesn´t mount on the desktop.
Disk utility sees the CD but doesn´t offer the option to mount.
Any ideas, anyone? (I´ve already checked that the option to mount CDs to the desktop is on).
Thanks,
Simon

HI Simon,
First, let's make sure of what Mac OS you are running. Click the Apple log top left in the Menu, then click, "About This Mac" ... a pane will open and indicate exactly which Mac OS version is installed on the iMac. Please post back to confirm it's 10.3.x.
Second, I would run Disk Utility. It's in the Applications>Utility folder. Repair Permissions. Also, if the system disk for the Mac OS installed on the iMac is available, use it to run Disk Utility to Verify an possible errors on the disk.
Third, Finder Preferences can get corrupted. Locate this file:
com.apple.finder.plist Here is the path: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences. Open the Preferences file and locate the file. Drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash, and reboot the iMac. Try to insert a CD to see if it mounts on the Desktop.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to post back and thanks for choosing Macosx.com.
Regards,
Carolyn :-)

Carolyn,
Trashing that Finder Prefs file seems to have done the trick - thanks very much. Next time you're in London,
I owe you a drink!
