I bought a used ibook G4 1.42/60GB/768 MB with Leopard installed. (But no discs). The seller listed my name as Apple Customer, which is unwieldly, and I easily changed my Administrator account name. This is my home computer. I want to change my short name to my name.
I did this a year ago with my iMac G5 with help from your forum but now that page is not there. A search of the forum today can't find it.
I know it's tricky and Apple's page is incomprehensible so will you please spell it out step by step for me?
Cheryl - Feb 10, 2008 - 10:56 pm
Dianne,
You may want to print this out so you have it handy.
First you need to enable Root User. It is different on Leopard than on Tiger.
Go to System Preferences>Accounts
Click the padlock at the bottom left corner and enter your password.
Click on Login Options
Uncheck the Automatic log in.
If you have File Vault turned on, you must turn it off.
Close System Preferences
1.From the Finder's Go menu, choose Utilities.
Open Directory Utility.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK. (that the main account/user on the computer which is you)
2, Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu
Enter the root password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK. Use a password that you can remember (or write it down and put it safe).
3. Log out of your account and log in as Root User
--If you are logging in from a list of usernames with pictures, click Other.
--In the Name field, type: root
--In the Password field, type the password you defined
4.Open the Accounts pane of the System Preferences application.
5. In the Name list, locate the user with the short name that you want to replace. This will be referred to as the "original user".
6. Note whether or not the original user is identified as Admin, which appears in the Kind column to the right.
7. Click New User. this is the plus (+) button.
8. Complete the Name and Short Name fields as desired. Be sure that the Short Name is exactly as you want it to appear.
9. Fill in the New Password and Verify fields.
10. If the user you are replacing is an Admin user, then select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer".
Note: This checkbox is dimmed and already selected if there is not another Admin user. Mac OS X requires at least one Admin user.
11. - this step is for older OS X versions. ignore
12. Quit System Preferences.
13. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
14. Choose Computer from the Go menu.
15. Open the Users folder in the Mac OS X disk.
16. Open the folder with the short name of the new user that you just created.
17. Drag the contents of this folder to the Trash.
Warning: Do not empty the Trash yet. In the event that you accidentally move contents of the wrong folder, you may recover them from the Trash after discovering your mistake.
18. Choose New Finder Window from the File menu. Be sure to position the new window so that you can see both Finder windows.
19. In the new window, open the folder of the original user.
20. Press the Option key as you drag the contents of the original user's folder into the new user's folder (that you emptied in Step 16). This makes a copy of the contents.
21. Close one of the Finder windows.
22. Open the Terminal application (located at /Applications/Utilities/).
23. Type: chown -R /Users/
Important: Replace "" with the actual short name of the new user you just created. For example, if the new user had the short name "jacques", you would type:
chown -R jacques /Users/jacques
24. Press Return
25. Quit Terminal.
26. Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
27. Log in as the new user. You should be able to access all of your original files on the desktop and in the folders of the Home directory.
Important: If you do not have access to your original items, log out and log back in as root, then repeat Step 22. Also, be sure that you did not place the wrong files in the Trash in Step 16.
28. Choose Home from the Go menu.
29. Open the Library folder, then the Keychains folder inside it.
30. Select the keychain, which should still have the short name of the original user.
31. Choose Show Info from the File menu.
32. In the Info window that appears, choose Name & Extension from the pop-up menu.
33. Change the name to match the new user's short name.
34. Close the Info window.
35. Open the Keychain Access application, located in the Utilities folder.
36. From the Edit menu, choose " Settings". For the user Jacques, this would appear as: jacques Settings
37. Click Change Passphrase.
38. Enter the desired password, then click OK. You may use the same password again or set it to match the login password of the new user.
Note: This step prevents you from discovering later that the keychain had retained an older password.
39. Quit Keychain Access.
40. Disable the root user, if you wish.
--Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
--From the Go menu, choose Utilities.
--Open Directory Utility.
--Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
--Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
--Choose Disable Root User from the Edit menu.
Once you are certain that everything is working properly, you may want to delete the Home folder of the original user, which should be empty.
I hope this is clear for you.

Hi Cheryl, Thanks so much for your prompt response! Clear directions but i got into trouble. I have left the laptop open and on until I hear back from you. I thought I did it right and my home folder is named Dianne but found i couldn't open any folders- no priviledges.
So I went back to terminal and tried to type in chown-R/Dianne/Users/Dianne and it says No such file or directory and repeats
apple-customers-ibook-g4:`root#
The entire window looks exactly like this
Last login: Sun Feb 10 22:52:47 on console
apple-customers-ibook-g4:`root#
apple-customers-ibook-g4:`root# chown-R/Dianne/Users/Dianne
-sh: chown-R/Dianne/Users/Dianne: No such file or directory
apple-customers-ibook-g4:`root#
At step 1 I entered Dianne Clowes as administrator
then at step 7 & 8 I entered Dianne Clowes but it wouldn't accept it as there was already a user with that name. So I changed it to D Clowes with the short name of Dianne.
I dragged the CONTENTS of the Dianne folder (but not the folder itself) to the trash as you said.
i have not put anything into the laptop yet, other than setting up my dial-up internet account, wanting to get this done first. But I can't afford to lose the OS as I have no back up.
help!
Thanks,
Dianne
Cheryl - Feb 11, 2008 - 6:05 am
Dianne,
Did you log in as the new short name user? Once logged in, go to Utilities>Disk Utility and open it. Click on the second icon in the side bar at the left, then click on Repair Permissions.
The folder you were to trash is the old short name user. Is that what you did? If not, you can log in as Root User and switch folders.
If this still does not work(and since you said you don't have any files in the home folder), while in Root, go to System Preferences>Accounts.
Delete the new user you created and create a brand new user. Make sure it can administer the computer. Now do not move any files or folders. Just log out of Root and log in as the new user.
Can the new user open folders?
Cheryl
Macartist - Feb 11, 2008 - 2:23 pm
Yes, last night I deleted the contents of the Dianne folder and replaced it with the contents of the old users folder. Then I trashed the old users folder. Migosh! I just checked the trash and it's empty! but I NEVER emptied it! How can that be?? Did repairing permissions empty it?
Today i logged out and then
I logged in as root home folder say root and deleted Dianne Clowes admin account leaving D Clowes Admin.
It still had the System Admin account at the top as admin so I changed the name to Dianne Clowes but it said it was taken.
I logged in as D Clowes home folder says Dianne could not open folders
Repaired permissions and a list of them all said
ACL found but not expected on ...........
Permissions repair complete
Logged out and then back in as D Clowes Home folder says Dianne can not open folders no permissions
There is no old users folder to switch and it's not in the trash. I think I'm in real trouble.
The accounts pane lists D Clowes Admin at the top then other accounts Guest Account disabled greyed out
From the start when I opened Directory Utility the pane is different from last night and says no Directory Servers Configured.Under Services , Active Directory is blank, BSD Flat File and NIS is checked in grey, LDAPv3 is highlighted and checked, Local is checked in grey.
Terminal now says
Last Login......
apple-customers-ibook-g4:~ root# and that's all it says.
i logged out and back in as D Clowes
Terminal now says
Last login......
apple-customers-ibook-g4:~Dianne$
just for the heck of it I logged out and back in as Dianne Clowes thought I'd deleted that but it worked and the home folder says root and folders open.
Terminal shows apple-customers-ibook-g4:~ root#
System Prefs shows this account as standard and allow user to admin this computer is not checked
Ohoh, I went to Computer> Users> and there are 2 folders, Dianne and Shared. Shared is empty but Dianne> Desktop shows Sites and 4 users. When i click on each user in turn I get a greyed image of your web site and your response to my question! More Info shows a Tiff image dated yesterday afternoon. I did that on my imac, and i am connected by ethernet to it. But nothing shows in Network. So I'll disconnect anyway. So now, disconnected and a reopened window shows the same thing.
How is this possible?
I had it hooked up to an external HD for backup- but shut off yesterday and today.
This is a royal mess! I hope you can straighten it out.
Thanks, Dianne
Macartist - Feb 11, 2008 - 2:26 pm
More....
I just checked Trash for the heck of it and there are the emptied contents of Dianne's home folder! The home folder now says root. I think i know what to do but I'm not going to attempt it on my own.
This should make it simpler- riight?
Dianne
Macartist - Feb 11, 2008 - 4:50 pm
I THINK I'VE GOT IT!
When I found the contents of my home folder in the trash for Root, I dragged Users>Dianne contents to desktop and replaced with the ones dragged out of the Trash. But I forgot to hold down the option key. Then I dragged the contents on the Desktop (prev owners)into the trash.
Logged out, logged in as D Clowes. Home says Dianne, Home folders open, Library folders open!
Terminal says apple-customers-ibook-g4:~Dianne$
I didn't touch it.
Ketchains> login.keychai>more info>Name and Extension says login.keychain
Accounts shows D Clowes Admin
Trash shows as empty but i didn't empty it.
So it seems to work but I haven't gone beyond step 21 this time.
I logged out and then back in and the applications work, the folders open, but I'm afraid to shut down and restart!
What should I do now?
Dianne
Cheryl - Feb 11, 2008 - 6:09 pm
Dianne,
It sounds like you fixed it. The trash is empty because the Root User has the trash, not D Clowes.
Now just to make sure, is D Clowes set as an admin user? If so, you should not have any problems. When you logged out, then logged back in and everything is working, you are good to go.
Should we leave this ticket open for the next day or so, just to make sure?
Cheryl
Macartist - Feb 11, 2008 - 11:29 pm
Hi Cheryl, Yes, thanks, I'd like to leave it open.
It's nice to know i have the original set up all backed up in my ext HD!
I'll reconnect and get this one in too.
What about changing the keychain and all the steps from 21 on?
Dianne
Macartist - Feb 12, 2008 - 12:06 am
Hi again Cheryl,
1n starting to set prefs etc I see that the computer is named Apple Customer's iBook. That must be because in Terminal it still says that name.
Please show me exactly how to type it in so it shows D Clowes iBook G4.
Thanks,
Dianne

I am copying from the ext HD to the laptop but cannot open certain folders- no priviledges. So we have to fix this. Of course the back up file is named apple-customer's ibook but i can live with that. But I wonder if I can create a new back up folder once we get it all done.

Same for ethernet to iMac. I can't open important folders and I need to be able to do that.
Dianne
Cheryl - Feb 12, 2008 - 6:00 am
Dianne,
It is easy to change the name of the computer.
Go to System Preferences (the light switch in the dock) and select Sharing.
At the top of the window that opens it says Computer's Name.
You can change that to what ever you want.
Now just click on the Show All button at the very top of the window.
With all the system preference panels showing, click on Network.
This is where you set up your internet connection.
In the pull down menu next to Show, select Ethernet.
Depending on what your ISP requires, depends on how you set this panel up.
Do you need help with that? If so, I need to know if you have a router with your modem or are you connecting directly to your modem? Who is your ISP?
As for permissions, you need to run Disk Utility. Go to Utilities and start up Disk Utility.
Click on the second icon in the side bar at the left. Now click on Repair Permissions. When done, quit Disk Utility and give it a test by opening a few folders.

Macartist - Feb 12, 2008 - 7:23 pm
Hi Cheryl,
Thanks! I changed the computer name. Now it seems the laptop is running fine! I got all internet and networking set up Ok - I'll never get over what a marvel that is! so handy! Ethernet to my iMac works 100% but I still cannot access files in my home folder on the external drive from the iBook. I can from the iMac. There are - signs on the folders that come with the OS. I need to get that fixed. I ran repair permissions again but that didn't do it.
Another question- for some reason iPhoto didn't come installed with the leopard OS and I don't have a backup disc. Can I install it from my 10.3 OS discs? They worked on my G3 Pismo and the G5 iMac.
Cheryl - Feb 12, 2008 - 9:02 pm
Dianne,
I do not think that the old iPhoto will work with Leopard. You need to get the iLife package from Apple. Don't confuse it with iWorks which is Pages and Keynote. Pages is the word processor and if you don't have one installed, you may need to get that as well. Appleworks does not work with Leopard.
You can try installing the old iPhoto, but I can not guarantee that it will work correctly.
Your home folder on the external - is it a back up/copy from a previous machine? You may need to change permissions manually.
Click on the home folder on the external, then go to the File menu and select Get Info.
At the very bottom is Ownership & Permissions
You can should say Read & Write. If not, use the pull down menu to change it.
If it does not allow you to change it, click on the triangle next to Details.
the Get Info window will expand
Owner should say your short name. If it doesn't check the pad lock next to the name. If it is locked Click on it to unlock it. You will be asked for your password (your user password)
Now use the pull down menu to change the owner.
You should also be set under access to read & write.
You do not need to worry about Group or Others.
Now click on the button at the very bottom of the Get Info window that says Apply to enclosed items.
It will give you a warning/are you sure. Click on okay.
It may take a while - depending on how many folders and files there are.
Now close the Get Info window and you should be able to access the folder.

Hi Cheryl,
Well, it gets curiouser and curiouser1 I copied Appleworks 6 and iPhoto from Panther via ethernet into the iBook and they work fine! I tried iWorks but it won't so I'll install it from the disc, which I have. I even got Acrobat Reader from Os 9 to open! ??? Oh well.
You are quite right that the external HD is from my old iMac G3 which runs Panther. When I open the Info pane for Dianne on the Ex HD with the G5 it is as you described and everything there is OK.
But when I open my home folder (on the ext HD it shows as an ordinary folder) both directly when plugged into the iBook, and indirectly through ethernet when plugged into the G5, the Info pane is different.
On all 3 the name/extension is Dianne. it's not locked.
When accessed from the iBook, instead of ownership and permissions it says Sharing and Permissions. And says You have Custom access.
It lists 2 unknowns and everyone, all of whom have Read Only. i can't delete them and when i try to add a new user, it opens the window to do it but every name I try is " not valid".
There is no "Details"
I can't make any changes.
So I can open the folder and see its contents but I can't open Desktop,Documents,Faxes, Library, movies, Music, Pictures. All the folders I added later like photos, maps, etc, I can open.
It occurs to me that the Ex HD was my operating Panther OS until the computer died. I took it out and put it into an enclosure. So it has a complete OS. But it doesn't show up that way now. I can connect 2 different HDs with 2 dif OS and they show as a complete OS. Why doesn't the Ex HD? it should have system prefs too but it doesn't. it has the system Library but it's quite different from the Panther library in the G5. 10.3.9 Maybe the dif is due to OS upgrades?
Dianne
Cheryl - Feb 13, 2008 - 6:00 am
Dianne,
You might have trashed the System folder from the external HD or the system folder is corrupt and not showing. Connecting it to different machines will show differently because of the different OS versions running the machines.
Do you need that external drive to have an OS? You can set it up to be your backup. With the External drive hooked up to a machine that you can get to those folders, create new folders and move those ever so important files to the new folders. Now trash that old home folder.
Now you can set things on that external to do backups of each of your computers.
Cheryl
Macartist - Feb 14, 2008 - 12:52 am
Hi Cheryl,
Well, I think we've got it all fixed now! Many thanks!
I guess the Ex HD was corrupted when the power supply (if that is what it was) flashed the screen and killed my computer.
I hooked it to the G5 where it works fine , as you said.
The users folder was empty so I trashed it, but I didn't trash the Library in case there's something there that works my old files. I can't access it still but I don't need to.
For all the other folders i couldn't access I created new folders called MY ....... in the first tier and dragged the contents into them and now I can access everything when I plug it into the G4.
Even renamed they wouldn't work in the second tier.
I don't care about it not having an OS- I just wondered what happened to it. But leaving the remnants of it there won't hurt I don't think. .It's the same as the G5.
Now I just have to sort all the info in duplicate and assorted folders from 3 computers ( my old laptop) into one organized backup Filing system.
I haven't emptied the trash just in case you have something to tell me....
Again, thank you so much for all your help.
Dianne
Cheryl - Feb 14, 2008 - 5:56 am
Dianne,
You do not need to keep the Library folder that is on the external HD. That Library folder is for the System/OS that was installed on the external. If you do not have Panther installed on any of your machines, you can not use it for anything you have now. You can safely trash it and empty the trash.
As for power, you should have a surge protector for your equipment. They look like power strips, but really help when your place gets a power surge or a low voltage coming through your lines.
What you should do is have Disk Utility scan the external with Repair Drive. If it finds any problems, you should back up those files on there to a CD/DVD or one of your working computers - then wipe the external clean using Disk Utility to Erase and format using Mac OS X Extended/Journaled. Now you should be able to use it as a backup drive for Leopard as well as the other machines.
Cheryl
Macartist - Feb 15, 2008 - 12:12 am
Hi Cheryl,
That was a good idea to 'repair' the ext HD and it was Ok, but good to know that.
i do have a surge protector- we really need it because we are the very end of the power line! I have heard that you should replace them every year as the small shocks gradually disable them. Is that true?
I think it was the power supply in the computer that blew.Either that or the screen.
I have a problem with Mail in leopard- I can't send email. I can download email and use my browser . As far as I can see the settings are correct but it lists the outgoing mail as 'uniserve(offline)'. This is while I was connected and could browse etc. I printed in that SNMP is 'mail.uniserve.com' but it won't work. I tried caribooo-mail.uniserve.com but that doesn't work either. i use Thunderbird in the G5 so they aren't exactly the same.
Also, when I connect by ethernet from the iBook Leopard to the G5 Panther all is well. i get the whole HD. But when I connect from the G5 to the iBook I get a choice of 2 iBook G4s- one has D Clowes' public folder or root!
I know i can drag the HD into the Public folder as a work around but I'd like to have it the way it should be.
As 'root' I can only see the desktop, downloads, library.
The other iBookG4 says Workgroup, user name Dianne, and asks for my password then gives me the message that it can't be opened because it is an alias and the original can't be found.
It scares me to have 'root' so open and available. I might mess things up.
Dianne
Cheryl - Feb 15, 2008 - 6:49 am
Dianne,
Mail: you need to use the smtp server that is your ISP. ISP's are now blocking all open relay outgoing mail to help stop spam. ISP is your internet server or the company that gives you the internet. You may need to check to see if your ISP has changed their recommended settings for outgoing mail. It maybe a change in the port number, or the authentication method. Going to their web site and finding setting up email should give you the correct settings.
The iBook with Root enabled - disable Root. Go to accounts and click once on the account name Root. Now click on the - box at the bottom of the window.
The Home folder of Root should be empty, so there is no worry about losing files. Now your iBook is secure.
Cheryl
Macartist - Feb 15, 2008 - 9:48 pm
Hi Cheryl,
boy, do you think this will ever end?
I checked accounts and the ONLY user is me as admin. The guest account is greyed out as not available. There is no root account. Would it show as root if i had just changed the name of the account from root to me?
Actually the left pane is all grey- even my Account and the + and - are too.The only thing dark is login options.
When I unlock it then Guest account becomes available but that's all.
I checked Uniserve's web site but they only go up to panther. so I waited 40 minutes on the phone, then left a message but they never got back to me. i'll send them an email.
Dianne
Cheryl - Feb 16, 2008 - 7:33 am
Dianne,
I did a bit more research for you. Here is the correct settings for Mail:
The account should be set as POP.
Incoming Mail Server: pop.uniserve.com
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.uniserve.com
In Server settings select authentication using user name and password.
The port numbers are default (what mail automatically uses) and you do not use SSL (secure password).
In doing a double check, Root user does not show up in Accounts.
Open Directory Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Open Directory Utility
Click the lock to make changes, and then enter an administrator name and password.
Choose Edit > Disable Root User.
Now you should be secure and Mail should be working,
Cheryl
Macartist - Feb 17, 2008 - 1:09 am
Hi Cheryl,
Thanks very much for getting my email going. i don't know why my settings wouldn't stick but I just started all over and now it works! i think it was the authentication.
No luck on the Directory utility. Mine is different from what you describe. I think I could have done it OK even so but it asks for Server name or IP address and couldn't find any. Also a choice of Active or Open Directory. i went through all the ethernet addresses, typed in the Ip address there but it didn't respond. nothing did. There is no Edit and no Root user. No user of any kind until i typed in my name but then it won't work without an active IP address or server address.
Maybe we can just leave that and I can work around it.
From the G5 I open network and it lists ibookG4 twice , the 2nd in CAPITALS and then Servers>iMacG5.local and no problem there.
The first ibookG4 goes>Connect. Registered user Dianne Clowes>Select volumes you wish to mount- D Clowes's Public Folder or root. Root mounts Desktop. Downloads, Library. Not much use. DC's Public Folder mounts drop box with Adobe PDF6.
The second IBOOKG4 opens SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication> WORKGROUP user name DIANNE> opens a message, 'The alias ibookG4 could not be opened because the original item cannot be found. So I thought I should delete this but I'm afraid to. I get a message saying ...iBook will be deleted immediately. Are you sure you want to continue?' so i cancel.
I dragged my iBook HD into my shared folder. Went to the G5 and opened my shared folder and it's empty!! Won't work. Took it out again. Went back to G5 and now DC's Public Folder is greyed out and not available. My only choice is root. Hmmm- maybe it was already still mounted.
Tried again and i get the registered owner window and I changed Dianne Clowes to D Clowes and I get 3 choices- DClowes Public Folder, Dianne, iBookG4! So I took iBook and it worked!! Dianne mounts my home folder. Both good.
So , how do I permanently change Registerd user to DClowes which is the name of my admin account in the G4?
And can i safely delete that second IBOOKG4? Is it just an alias or would it damage the laptop OS?
Sneaky question- I always have to dial up twice to maintain a connection on the G5 and I searched your Forums for help. Someone suggested changing the modem script to one of a few suggested ones and i did. Eventually i found it was an older telephone that caused most of the trouble although it still happens. And it doesn't happen to the neighbours with the same ISP. So I want to change it back but I can't find the place to do it. So far it hasn't happened with the G4.
Thanks so much,
Dianne
Cheryl - Feb 17, 2008 - 10:44 am
Diane,
Let's do one thing at a time.
First, in each of your computers go to Home>Library>Recent Servers. Trash all the files in that folder. Empty the trash.
You can not just drag the hard drive icon to sharing. All it will do is move the icon and not the files within it. In order to share, you need to go to the System Preferences>Sharing panel. Personal File Sharing will share your home folder.
Registered user is the person who is allowed to see the shared files. You are a registered user within the OS to see shared files.
When the original can not be found, you can safely delete the alias. If it does dismount all the references to the iBook, that is okay.
Your IP address: To find the address or local name of the computer, open Sharing preferences and select Screen Share. The address or name is displayed to the right of the sharing services list.
To change the phone number for your Dial up - go to System Preferences>Network>Modem. You should be able to put in the correct number.
Is the user name in the G5 the same as the G4?
Cheryl
Macartist - Feb 17, 2008 - 6:33 pm
Hi Cheryl,
I can't find Recent servers anywhere in either computer. Only in OS9 in Classic. I did a search when it wasn't in Library on either.
The Screen Share address is ibook G4.local and that makes sense as the address for the iMac is imacG5.local. but the Directory utility won't accept it. neither will it accept the ethernet IP address. I tried Active and Open Directories. I get "unable to add server. no response from....." so there is no Directory Servers Configured.
I decided to go back to the very beginning, your first email and review everything. But until i get an address the Directory will accept...... Root user was enabled.
But I carried on anyway.
I logged in as root and the accounts pane shows User name D Clowes. The left pane shows at the top Dianne Clowes Standard then under other accounts, D Clowes admin and Guest account disabled. I cannot delete any accounts, only add. While there i checked the trash and the old users files were still there so I trashed them.
I allowed Dianne Clowes to admin this computer and it changed from standard to admin account. So now I have 2 admins.I logged out and back in as Dianne Clowes but it wouldn't allow it. Had to log in as D Clowes. i opened Accounts and it's as before. So I have a root account under the name of Dianne Clowes?
My user name for the G5 is Dianne Clowes. I had trouble getting that to work in the G4 but it would take D Clowes, so that's what it is there. I would prefer to have them the same, but, this is OK. funny that the G5 wants to "connect to the file server "iBook G4" as Registerd User Dianne Clowes " when the ONLY account in my G4 login is D Clowes admin. Even Guest account is disabled.
I tried to trash the alias IBOOK-G4 for WORKGROUP user name DIANNE
and I couldn't as I got a message saying "you do not have sufficient privileges for some of them" and no option to authenticate.
I tried the first ibook G4 option in the G5 network and THIS time i get D Clowes Public Folder, iBook G4!!! and root. And iBook G4 WORKS.
I'm so confused now...I'd like to get rid of extraneous stuff but maybe I should just leave it as is- it works!
Dianne
Cheryl - Feb 17, 2008 - 7:40 pm
Dianne,
Do you have the Leopard install disks for the G4?
My thoughts are - to just clean up the G4 and do a total new install. That is to wipe the drive clean and start all over. Then at start up after the install, you can set up a new Admin account with exactly what you want.

Hi Cheryl,
Sorry for the delay but I was away for a day. I don't have any Leopard discs. It came preinstalled on the laptop. I copied it to my ext HD but I know it won't reinstall from that and anyway it's the same as it is in the laptop right now. The only discs i have are for panther and I don't really want to go back. Now I have all my stuff in there....
Do you see anything actually WRONG? That should be fixed?

Dianne,
You should have your own copy of the full install Leopard. This is so you can start up the iBook with that disk and use Disk Utility on the disk to scan and repair your drive. And if any problems do arise, you can do a new install. The seller should have included the Leopard disk with your iBook just for that reason.
What I am thinking is that it is probably better to erase the drive on the iBook and start all over with a brand new install of Leopard. Then after the install and it restarts, you can set it up to exactly how you want it without a problem.
You can not just copy the hard drive or the system folders. There are invisible files that do not get copied when you do that. If you want a bootable back up, you should use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. These programs will copy all the files - even the invisibles.
I recommend at this point to get the Leopard install disk and completely erase the drive, then install. Do you want the instructions to do this?

Hi Cheryl,
It would have been nice if he had included the OS discs but... Eventually I'll get one but not right away as i spent so much for the laptop and a nifty tote for it! (See coolpodz on ebay). i do know what to do to reinstall and if things go wrong before i get Leopard i can use Panther. It does very well actually. I have Panther for G4 installed on my Pismo.
As long as there is nothing wrong that you can see then i am happy . You solved several problems for me- changed the short name , got my email working, got networked properly and things seem to be running smoothly.
I can't thank you enough for your patience and help!
