I have an Imac G3 400mhz with 128Mb ram. It is running OS10,3,9 and OS9,2. The hard drive is only 10GB and is nearly full even though I do not have anything of any size stored on it. (only the applications that came with the operating systems).
Because of this I tried to delete items to give me more space but as I am a newby on a Mac computer, I have probably deleted something I should not have. I have gained about 2GB of space now but classic will not start. I only use it for appleworks and the game of 'Bugdom" that the grandchildren play. When I try to start these programs, classic tries to start and then says
"a system error occured. temporally turn off extensions and restart and hold down the shift key". I don't know how to turn of the extensions and I have tried that but to no avail.
I would like to know how to get classic working again and how to clean up my hard drive. A lot of items are automatically installed when setting up the computer that I will never use and I would like to remove these.
Thank you for any help you may be able to give me. I can use a PC machine but I cannot totally understand the mac system yet.
That is why I am getting into trouble.
Allan
You will need to reinstall OS 9.2.2 on its partition. Boot from your OS 9.2.2 install disk (put it into the CD drive and restart your computer while holding down the "C" key on your keyboard) and have it reinstall OS 9.2.2 where it was before.
To be sure, when you are cleaning up delete ONLY applications and data files THAT YOU CREATED/COPIED/OR DOWNLOADED. If you don't know EXACTLY what is in a given file leave it alone. There's a nice little freeware program called AppZapper which is invaluable for doing this.

Thank you for your help, Charlie. I will follow your instructions and also download that program.
