Knowledge Level: I'm New!
Problem: Software
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Performa 6300CD
RAM: 48meg
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: System 7.5.1

Description:
I have downloaded the TIL file on clean install procedure for 7.5. I got the system to startup from the system CD and ran Disk First Aid as was step 1. At step 2, I'm confused about the section titled Update Hard Disk Drivers. I have an AT_O standard issue hard drive which came with the unit. When I click on my hard drive the only option I have is to initialize. It does not offer an "update" option(grayed out). I am instructed to update in step 2. What am I to do next?

My system has been a little buggy of late, especially when I am using the internet. I get a trash item "Rescued Items From Hard Disk" several times a week. I felt I should do a clean install. I am also planning to upgrade to 7.5.3 as I recently downloaded the 19 files involved with this.

Your help in this matter would be appreciated.

Hey Dale, welcome to No Wonder...

A clean install is a good idea to get rid of almost all your mac's ills. When the "update driver" option is grayed out, it means you already have the latest version of the driver for that OS. Newer OSes can contain newer harddisk drivers. Upgrading to 7.5.3 is good but I would suggest going to 7.5.5 if you can. In fact, if you can shell out $99, you can go to OS 8.5. OS 8.5 is by far the most stable OS that Apple has offered. You can also take advantage of Sherlock and a number of new features that OS 8.5 can offer. If you still plan to install 7.5, you can ignore step 2 because you already have the latest drivers. Go on to step 3.
