My iMac G4 has started acting slow lately, and I think it has to do with my RAM. I've been running Tiger since the New Year.

OS 10.4.2
512 MB SDRAM
800 MHz

when I look at the "SysStat" Widget it says the following about my memory:

Wired: 54.8M
Active: 194M
Inactive: 232M
Used: 481M
Free: 30.3M

My hard drive has 26 gb used, 24 free

Is there some sort of Cache that needs cleared or something I can do to free up my memory? I don't run any heavy software, just basic word processing, iPhoto, iTunes, Safari, etc.

thanks!

You can certainly clear your system and user caches; initially, your Macintosh will run slowly (only at startup) because it has to rebuild all the caches. I periodically run an utility called YASU (Yet Another System Utility) and the default setting for this app works well for me. You can also use Cocktail, Onyx, and best of all, Applejack (which you have to use in single user mode); all do similar things.

YOu make enough memory to do what you're doing; I thing your iMac just needs a tuneup, so try YASU first.

HTH and please let us know what happens. Have a safe and happy Holiday.
